I also think you have to factor in where the wedding is.  If someone is flying into a destination wedding, a personal smaller gift for the wedding and shower is probably fine.

My experiencce is limited, but here’s my take. I give registry items at the shower. Maybe something cute not on the registry but definietly for the couple or the home and not the bride specifically. For the wedding, I’ll give cash or a nice a nice bottle of wine if I went to the shower. I’ll send a registry gift if I did not go to the shower.

 

ETA: Being in the wedding party changes the gifting rules. I would not expect my BM/GM to do everything theyve done and then also get severaal gifts. When I was a bridesmaid, I got the couple a small wedding gift, but considered my real gift everything I spent on and for their wedding (bachelorette, bridal shower, room, travel, dress).
