I guess if that is the status quo in your group of friends, okay. To me it sounds awfully high. I would be happy if my friends could or wanted to pitch in at all other than a gift (sort of expected.) I know some people who do spend that much, but I would not plan the party expecting that. I would plan it where they can each pitch in $50-100 and then suggest that if anyone wants to splurge on X they can. I think some apologies are in order for sure.

Your showers must be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more elaboratee than our showers. All the ones I have hosted or been to have been either lunch or afternoon tea at someone’s house, 15 -20 people, home cooked and baked food,  a bakery cake and a few decorations.

I don’t think I have spent more than $50 at any one event (not counting gift).

I think it is completely unreasonable to expect a Bridesmaid or Best Man to spend $300-$400 hosting a shower.

What kind of shower are they planning that would cost $1600 to host?
