How bad is this?
Almost everyone at my job has been sick and so I was so fortunate as to catch it last friday. I am on day 5 of being sick now and it’s not getting any better 🙁 As if i haven’t been terrified of labor all along, the thought of going through it with a runny nose, hacking cough, and no energy to start, makes it seem ten times worse. I know the advice is to relax and drink lots of fluids, but it’s hard when you are working full time (the relaxing part anyway, i am doing good on drinking fluids) and i really need to work to the end! I am also trying to avoid taking too much medication. So far i have taken tyelenol cold & flu the past two nights just so i could sleep somewhat decently. i am not taking anything during the day except tea with honey and lemon.
Any words of encouragement on how to get rid of this cold ASAP? Or how to get thru labor with a bad cold if say i go into labor in the next couple of days?

@dynamic_duo: I’m so sorry you are sick. That sounds like no fun at all especially so close to your EDD. Can you phone your doctor and they write you a precription to clear it up quicker? Thoughts going out to you that you feel better soon! 🙂

A hot washcloth with a few drops of peppermint oil. In the tub or shower you can steam your face with it. Then, wring it out and hang it somewhere near your bed. It works wonders on the sinuses and congestion. I even brought the washcloth with me to work so I could inhale it any time I got really stuffed up. I also use some on the coals of a sauna when I’m sick. I’m not sure if that’s an option for you, but sauna kick starts immunity and the peppermint makes it so much easier to breathe.
Otherwise, gargle with warm salt water. Use a nettipot and distilled water (never tap water) to flush out your sinuses. Lots of oj, water and salty soup (like gargling, it clears the passages) and a multivitamin. If you’re up for it, mild to moderate exercise is great too.

@MARIE901: my next doctor appt is this friday, i will see if i am still sick by then and what he says about it, as it will be a full week then…fingers crossed my symtoms get better, it just sux now because i feel it i has gotten worse over the past two days.

@artichokey: thanks for the suggestions. i have been drinking lots of OJ and have been eating soup every day since sunday. Also been taking steaming hot showers, but i will try to get some peppermint oil and try the wash cloth thing you suggested. I did read last night that exercise can help, but i am afraid of exercising (i.e., long walks, because that’s all i can do right now), will jump start labor! maybe i will try some shorter walks just to get my heart rate going for a bit.

@dynamic_duo: Can you swim? Even if it’s just treading water or putting a floatie between your legs and using your arms, it might help a ton. It sounds gross but the water/chlorine helps to move things along in your sinuses. Then you’d get some nice low-impact exercise that hopefully wouldn’t start anything.

@artichokey: i would love to swim, just have nowhere to go swimming at the end of october! i will go for a walk tonight, but just a short one, like 20 minutes should be good. its not like walking guarantees instant labor 😉
and if i remember to pick up some salt, i will gargle with salt water.

@dynamic_duo: Can you do light non-aerobic exercise, like doing bicep curls with cans of soup kind of thing? Or maybe light/partial squats or a few yoga poses maybe? Most of the exercise I get these days is of that variety, vs. walking or other aerobic workouts because I get winded so easily, and it’s also gentle/doesn’t put pressure downwards.
Hope you feel better soon – I am knocking on wood and crossing my fingers, eyes, and toes that I don’t get sick before the end. Darling Husband brought back a super nasty bug from international travel that I miraculously did not get so I hope my luck holds out.

You need to be careful with peppermint, as it is known for its relaxing properties and can actually induce labour… which is great, if that’s what you want!
I’m in the beauty industry and that was one thing I was told, do not use peppermint products on any pregnant women, even those in early pregnancy.

I’m big on Orange Juice and vitamin C when I get sick. I swear a gallon of orange juice always has me better in 2 days.

Hang in there! Honestly, I know you’re trying to hang in there at work, but I would try to take a half day or a day off. What you need the most is REST. 🙂 I know that you know that, but you need to get better so that you are in top shape to deliver that baby! 🙂
I hope you feel better soon! I’ve heard raw garlic is also a natural antibiotic. It sounds kind of gross, but if you’re desperate you might try it!
