So sorry!  More people are suffering from layoffs than swine flu (trying to hopefully make you smile)!  On a positive note, at least it was after your wedding & you got a paid vacation for you wedding.

I’m so glad to hear you have severance, that is better than nothing!!!  I know how much what you are going through sucks.  I was laid off 5 weeks after we got engaged, and it really felt like "the end of the world".  (I have always been afraid of being laid off b/c my Dad being laid off in the 90’s caused major problems for my family when I was growing up).  Big hugs to you!

Bellenga’s advice is excellent!  I did something similar.  I moped and cried for several days, and was incredibly depressed.  But I knew I had to snap out of it if I wanted to move forward.  I forced myself to get up at 9AM each day (about an hour later than I did for work), and sit at my laptop and update and send resumes, job searched online, etc.  I also made a point of contacting everyone I know and re-establishing connections.  LinkedIn is a good website for that if you are not already on it.  I also looked up local associations and started going to meetings – I met recruiters at one of them.  If I hit a dead end on job searching I googled "interview tips" and things like that and made notes on what I’d say to some common questions, especially ones I dread, like "what is your biggest weakness".

I did get lucky and found a job (through someone I know) after 3 weeks of unemployment.  It’s not perfect – a few title drops down and a HUGE salary cut, but still better than nothing and better than unemployment.  Don’t be ashamed or afraid of going back to your old company – if you can do that look at it as a temporary move while you find your next dream job.

I hope this helps – hang in there!!!

Irishgirl-

I’m so sorry to hear about this.  Nothing like a big fat slap in the face when you just celebrated a wonderful day and embarked on a new life phase 🙁

My sister came back from her honeymoon fired.  She was a manager, and they used the opportunity of her absence to clean out her desk and lock her out of her job.  She used the opportunity to change things around in her life, and is now an avid triathalete and working on a business plan.

You know how when one door closes a window opens?  Well, let’s hope this opens up a whole new and better realm for you!  It definitely did for my sister.
