We did that.  Our guest list was smaller though so we didn’t have to worry about people taking up too much space.

It looks like there might be a black mat on top of the photo and signing area.

Maybe you cover up the rest of it with wax paper so they can’t sign it?  Wouldn’t look too pretty though.

It looks like they had a white border around it, and took that off once everyone was done signing. It would make sense, it’s the perfect shape, and if the guests only had a silver sharpie, most people would know that it will show up better on the black 🙂

Is your mat going to look just like this one; or will it be a basic wide mat with a photo inside a photo frame? If it’s the latter, I reccommend setting out the mat for guests to sign in the frame (just remove the glass pane and assemble the frame as if it was there) My SIL just set out the mat and she got signatures all around the edges from guests who didn’t consider that a frame would cover it up.

If it’s exactly like the one above, buy or create a mat and place it around the area you want people to sign and remove it later.
