Couple thoughts- old fashioned sterling silver jewelry was typically expected to develop a lustrous “patina” of fine scratches. It was the way it was supposed to look.
I THINK sterling silver is often considered more malleable than other precious metals, so the setting of a stone may be more vulnerable to loss.
As it happens, my very favorite jewelry stone is the Rose de France amethyst, so I personally would be thrilled to wear your ring as an engagement ring. I will admit though, that I might be a little concerned myself about the strength of the setting.
