    @sn2bmrsmntgmry:  I ordered one, since no one needs to keep the original, they just need to see it and copy it.

    I haven’t started my name change game yet, however, so….

    you mean your marriage certificate that shows that you’re married? the license is the one you get in order to get married.

    I have a certified copy and the original of my marriage certificate. I have never needed more.

    How much are the copies? I would just get 5ish. It’s not a huge expense and random people are going to want a copy. My airline rewards miles program requested a copy to update my name.

    ETA: oh the license? one

    @sn2bmrsmntgmry:  no I don’t believe you can get copies of your marriage license … but I wouldn’t know. I know I can’t.

    You really only need the original and ONE certified copy of your marriage certificate. anybody else who wants a copy you can just color photocopy it. If you have to mail in the actual certified copy, the body who requested it usually sends it back.

    We got 5.  We got one for our attorney to keep with all our other important paper (Birth Cert, Div papers, Land Contracts etc) One for our copies of important papers.   One for me to carry in my purse (I refuse to change my DL until it expires because of the PITA system my state has to get a new on) One for my folder I used to get all the name change things done.  And the last one was for our life insurance/investment firm.  They needed a copy with the seal on it, something to do with the types of investments that we have.  My dad is the rep for the firm so I really didn’t question it since he has it at his office.

    We got 4 it was really cheap to get extra copies tough.  It was just incase they we’re misplaced so we wouldn’t need to get anymore.

    I didn’t change my name so we didn’t need it for that but we did need it to try and buy a house and for insurance purposes.

    We ordered 3 certificates (just because it felt like it would be enough, lol). So far I have only needed one, like previous posters have mentioned. I am going through the name change process now and looks like the DMV, Passport agency, Soc Sec agencies only needs to either see it, or make a copy of it. I’ve always left with the orignal after getting those things taken care of.

    But I am glad I ordered some extra anyhow in case I will need it for whatever reason.

    @UrbanGem:  Yep, I ended up getting two because it sounded like a good number lol. But they were pretty cheap as well. I have only really needed one copy though.

    We got two. I sent one with my stuff to get my passport and then used the other one to make copies and what not for everything else. It would have taken me a lot longer to do the name change thing if I hadn’t had more than one. More than two though would have been useless (but I can see the reasoning for others.)

    We didn’t even have the option of keeping the original.  That’s on file with the city or state.  We paid a small fee ($15?) for one certified copy.  When it came to insurance issues, my employer needed me to bring in my certified copy (not a copy of the copy) so they can make a copy (I got mine back) to add DH to my dental/vision plan, and DH just needed to send in a copy to add me to his prescription plan.

    I got 3 copies. We have one to put in the safe, one to keep with the attorneys, and one to travel with as I’m not changing my passport to my married name right away.

    If you don’t go to the social security office, you have to mail the certificate in with the other paperwork. They send it back, but if you don’t have an extra copy, you have to wait for it to come back before you can do anything else. Same with the passport.
