We booked our reception at a restaurant and our package includes a dessert option of the most delicious chocolate mousse cake. Since we’re already serving cake, we don’t really see the need to order a separate large wedding cake. But we want to cut into a cake for the photos, so we ordered a single tiered, 10-inch round wedding cake that we’ll prop onto onto a tall cake stand. It’ll be decorated with ribbon and fresh flowers. The money we save will help us out a lot since we’re on a really tight budget. But my in-laws are horrified by that idea. They insist that we need a cake with tiers to the ceiling, even if no one will eat it! They think that it’ll be so embarrassing to have a small wedding cake. They offered to pay for a large wedding cake, but I just think it will be such a huge waste of money and cake. Has anyone had just a one-tier wedding cake before? Will it be too tacky? What do you think?

I think your idea would work great. I see no need for a multi-tiered cake.
Several Bees have done cake buffets (Mrs. Avocado comes to mind) or just had a small cake for the ceremonial cutting and offered other desserts. I’ve been to wedding that did similar things and it was great.
I say look for some pictures here on Weddingbee or on the internet so your inlaws can get an idea of how lovely it will look with the cake stand. Then stick to your guns. It’s what you and your Fiance want that matters most.

Very cute picture crebre! I think that a small little cake is a great idea, especially if you already have other cake for people to eat!

I’m not doing this (no delicious cake is included with our venue), but I know I saw on multiple bakery websites that they can do a full-size cake with only 1 layer that is real and the rest with styrofoam/fake layers. If you’re worried about the look, it might be a good option. That said, I think the one tier cake would be awesome too!
@crebre – that cake is too cute!
