PeachyMama:  Sad situation, but your sister just needs to keep doing the job she was given. She did what she was instructed to, dog walker didn’t and was fired as a result. There’s still another dog to be taken care of though. If the owner thought she was at fault she probably would have been fired too.

This is horrible, and my worst nightmare every time I leave the city (I only leave my furbaby with a very select list of people, and still constantly worry).

As hard as it is for your sister, she really needs to keep watching the other dog. This dog owner is far away, greiving, and doesn’t need the added stress of trying to find someone new to take care of her other dog from a distance.

The dog walker shouldn’t have taken the sick dog — I get that we’re all busy and she didn’t want to screw up, but if the dog was noticeably sick she/he should have made an effort to get in touch with someone before taking the dog out. As the dog walker I don’t know what I’d do — apologize, and then keep my distance probably?

Nothing else to be done. The situation as passed. The only thing that can be done now is to take care of the remaining dog until the owner gets home.

Aw, what a sad situation! I feel so bad for the poor dog, his owner, and your sister. There’s nothing more your sister can do besides continue to take care of the other dog. She did nothing wrong and it’s not her fault. How awful. 🙁

Tell your sis to take the healthy dog to the vet asap to get checked out too. He also could’ve been exposed to the same virus that the lab was.

Your sister is doing/ Has done what she could. I agree with the PP to get the other dog checked

My coworker brought her cat to my house to watch for a few weeks. I heard some noises and came downstairs in a towel after my shower just in time to watch him run into a wall. I have no idea if he was sick and that’s why he ran into it so hard, or if he just was chasing something and lost grip and tumbled full speed into it, but I’ve never seen a cat do that before. I ran over to him but he literally just died in my arms a few seconds later. I have never felt so awful about something in my life.

I don’t blame her for not wanting to continue watching the other dog. I couldn’t catsit/dogsit for years afterward. I would feel terrible watching any animal die, but when someone else has entrusted you with their furbaby, its just a whole different level. Did she ask if she should take the other dog in to get checked out? PP’s suggestion sounds like a good one to me.
