@littlemissmoo: Oh I wouldn’t be able to have a friend into the poly lifestyle…I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from constantly asking impolite questions! I’m sure they would get sick of me pretty quick.

So just curious, is he open to his partners having other relationships or is it more a Big Love style that we most commonly are exposed to?

Curosity definitely has the best of me on this one… I’ll tune in b/c I think it’s fasinating to see how other people live.  I can’t even come close to understanding polygamy — I know I couldn’t and wouldn’t do it!

@Kanebaby: I have to agree with you…I love TLC but seriously between the duggers and gosslins and now this new sister wives show comming out, I’ve almost lost all respect for this station.

I’m a “too each their own” person too but I cannot find anything to make this new show right…

@Edina:I know what you mean! I had to stop and check myself before whilst talking to him – although it takes a lot to get him offended thankfully! He’s totally open to his partners having other partners but so long as they are actual relationships and not going out and having one-night stands type of thing, which is how I understand lots of the more modern poly relationships are like. The Big Love style cases are kind of the extremists of the lifestyle. But that’s what makes for good reality TV so that’s what we’re more exposed to I suppose.

@littlemissmoo: Interesting! I feel like one-night stands would bother me less because there’s no emotional attachment.

And yeah, I’m sure you’re right about how most modern poly relationships are. I guess when I hear the word “polygamy” my mind goes right to the FLDS and anything other than that I think “open relationship.” Semantics!

@jennychicago I completely agree about the cupcake show!! I was all excited thinking it was going to be cute and it was SO scripted, fake, corny, etc. Major sad face. It’s actually too painful to watch.

I really excited to watch this show just because I’m very curious!  It’s already set on the DVR!

The show looks interesting. But as much as I love TLC – its more of a “love to hate” relationship with that station. The show will be amusing for sure, but I doubt it’ll be intellectually stimulating.

As far as polygamy goes… I believe it should be legal. Of course there are many instances of polygamy & underage girls… abuse… etc. But if everyone involved is a consenting adult then I see no problem. If these families never get “officially” married – then how is it against the law? In North America we have the freedom to live with whoever we want and sleep with whoever we want. I think that if polygamy were more out in the open – there would probably be less secrecy and less abuse going on in these communities.

I’ll try to catch the show. I adore Big Love and find the topic interesting.

I personally don’t get it. I haven’t seen any commercials for it but it doesn’t interest me at all. My aunt is LDS and one of the running jokes when she got married was that she would be the head wife (forget the exact term used), but neither she nor her husband believe that polygamy is right. Also, the last time I checked (out of pure curiosity), polygamy is not legal anywhere in the US so these other “wives” are not legal even if their religious commune might believe otherwise.

I’m watching this show right now, and it’s really interesting how they each have their own apartment area within the main house.  I’ve never seen Big Love on HBO so this is all pretty new to me.  Strange but fascinating……..

@AudzinLuv: That is the exact word I was thinking of when I started watching this tonight.  It is fascinating!

Okay I just finished watching it, and I really liked it! While I might not really “get” their lifestyle… I really appreciated that every person in the family seemed to think for themselves and be heard. When I have seen other things on polygamists (like YFZ ranch stuff for example)… they all looked so much like mind-controlled-pod-people. These women seemed like intelligent modern women who happen to believe in a different kind of life. I think it will be an interesting season.

ditto corgi.. although it seemed that the husband was more harried than the women trying to keep everyone else happy lol!!! he seemed very very careful about how he chose his words.
