All the buffet weddings I’ve been to had ridiculously long lines that did not move or they ran out of food for the last tables (mine).  I just haven’t been to a wedding where it was executed well.

I  agree the long lines at buffets are a drag but at the sit down dinner weddings we have been to it has taken so much time away from the dancing and fun of the event. Its a choice really. Nobody is mingeling or chatting during the sit down dinner. That was enough of a reason to have the buffet for us  But its personal preferance really. Both are nice

I personally have never liked a buffet anywhere at any event. That’s just me.

A nice sit down dinner always wins with me. Buffets are so casual & remind me of the high school cafeteria. Nothing fancy about standing in a dress for food. Of course there are sitdown dinners that suck & buffet dinners that suck. So either way the quality has to be there.

I’ve only been to weddings with a buffet and I thought they were fine! They’re typically much more affordable and I like the variety of food options!

@mjwyatt84:  I’ve never noticed that. Always see everyone chatting at the tables all sit down dinners. If anything they’re served faster since you don’t have to wait in line for food. More time for dancing, all about the dancing!

I personally do not like buffet style dinners, plus the lines are usually very long. So I would go with a sit down dinner any time.

I’ve been the last person to get food at the entire buffet reception, and I was pretty annoyed (and HUNGRY) by the end of it.  People were working on dessert by the time I got through my lukewarm entree.

Family style is always a good option for variety, I think.  People don’t have to wait in line, but they still have a variety of foods to choose from.  Lazy susans are always a huge plus with this option, so people don’t have to lean over things or pass the serving plates.

I hate buffets because I can’t stand the fact that guests could sneeze or touch my food before I get my turn at the buffet.

I much prefer platted and if your offering 3 choices it’s even better:)

i don’t care for buffets.  i especially don’t like them while wearing a nice dress and heels.  i would have nightmares of someone spilling their plate on the bride’s dress.

Usually I like plated for formal weddings.  However, we had a buffet due to our venue set up and it went really well -we had about 120 guests and the DJ dismissed the tables, so the line wasn’t super long.  Our caterer was amazing and a lot of our guests complimented the food.

It probably helped the dinner was only about 30 minutes after the cocktail hour ended and there were plenty of hot hors d’oeuvres for guests, so they weren’t starving.

So, in summary, buffets can work if (a) not huge guest list, (b) keep it organized, and (c) guests aren’t waiting forever for food/have had appetizers.
