I love sit down dinners! However, they are way more expensive than buffets. Unfortantly, we cannot afford a sit down dinner. But the quality of the food will be yummy and we wont run outta food!

@Bjones107:  I always had the opinion that buffets were tacky, until I had a few sit-down dinners at weddings… none of which were that good. You don’t get much of a choice for the sit-down meal so I think a buffet would be better.

If you can class it up a bit and manage the lines, I think the buffet is the best bet. Of course neither option is perfect, but everything has its pros and cons!

Neither is better than the other. It is just personal choice. Fi and I chose to have plated dinner.

Buffet! My favorite wedding receptions have all been buffet. More choices and usually better food! The last one I went to was perfect because there was never a long line! They had the food out on several different big tables spread out from each other.

@Bjones107:  I vote sit down dinner, but it depends what you’re going for. Sit down seems more formal (for the love of god, please don’t do family style though) and buffets are more logistically challenging (depending on wedding size)

We are doing a heavy app buffett style BUT we are only having approximately 60 wedding guests. The weddings that are larger have extremely long lines UNLESS your wait staff actually tells tables when they can get in line. I think it depends on the size of your wedding to be honest.

We’re having a buffet, but the reception is going to be very relaxed (outdoors under a tent, I’m discouraging fancy clothes and heels) and we are expecting about 100 people, which I think is a doable number for a buffet.  I think buffets are unpleasant at formal weddings – like other PP’s I also feel awkward in a nice dress and heels waiting in line – and larger guest numbers can certainly hold up the line.

It depends on the number of guests, but I usually prefer buffets.  I’m picky plus I have food allergies, so I will typically end up hungry after a plated meal.  In addition, I hate being tied down to my seat.  However, if there are more than 50 guests per buffet line, I’d rather have a plated meal to avoid long lines.  I read another bee, NAvery (sp?), had her guests served salads like a plated meal, but had everything else as a buffet and it worked out well for her.

As long as the food is hot and good, it doesn’t matter to me!

As long as the food is good (and hot) I don’t care!

Actually, I like buffets because I can take more of something I know I will love and less (or none) of something I’m not as fond of.  You definitely need two lines though or at a certain point, four lines (two tables).  So keep in mind the total number of your guests.  If you are doing an super formal (black tie) event though I think plated is nicer.

I just don’t like the idea of that many people near the food I’m about to eat. I’d prefer a seated, served dinner.

it depends on the size of the wedding. i love buffets and we had one at our wedding. we only had 40 people so it worked really well. i think for large weddings, sit downs are better.

I prefer buffet as a bride. The price of wait staff and dishes when looking at a sit down dinner is a bit psycho. Not to mention if your wedding isn’t going to have over 150 people, a buffet is personally reasonable. How long could it honestly take those people to get through..?
