Ordered my dress yesterday (yay!), and am curious as to how close the measurements of others were to the manufacturers sizing chart for the size ordered when you ordered your dress.
@Nautigirl: Usually the dress is a few size larger depending on the fit. I tried on dresses that were my street size all the way up to 6 sizes bigger.
I think I should clarify.
Looking at the sizing chart for the manufacturer, and comparing it to your own measurements, did the salon order the closest to your measurements, or did they order up a size?
(ex. my waist was 26, and my hips 37, all measurements over clothing. The salon ordered my dress in a size with waist 26.5″ and hips 37″. I was under the impression that they generally ordered a size larger as most dresses can’t be taken out)
Almost all the dresses I tried on were made with enough seam allowance to be let out up to 2 sizes. If they measured you over street clothes I would think you’ll be good, as jeans, shirts, bras etc add more to your measurments then your underwear will when you wear the dress. I found that the consultants who had been with a salon for a while had a good grasp of how different lines fit. I had one who said something along the lines of “with brand X I would order up a size, I’ve had a lot of brides complain they run a little small, or with brand Y most dresses are true to the size chart.”
I’ve heard a lot of people order bigger sizes because of measurements that don’t match the size charts well. (ex: their hips are 37 and their waist is 22, but the size chart offers a 37hip and and 26 waist. so they have to order the size to fit the hips even though the waist will be huge) It sounds like you lucked out with being very close to the size chart- it should save you a lot of money in alterations.
You should order the dress that fits your largest size, so if your waist is a 29 and one size fits at 28.5 and the next at 30, you order the size that fits at 30. In your case, it sounds like the ordered the correct size.
Ah I see! I know my size in both David’s Bridal and JCrew and they happen to be the same (also my street size, a 6). Their measurements are very close to my true measurements.
I know my size in Casablanca (8) and their measurements are close to mine (but not exactly the same as DB/JCrew.
So i guess my real meaurements are in between the 6s and the 8s numbers of these brands.
With my dress they ordered the size that matched my measurements. It has a corset back and they said that would give a little room if i got bigger or got smaller.
@FutureWife517: Sounds silly of me but I hadn’t considered the flexibility a corset back offers. Thanks for mentioning that.
