Don’t wear your pyjamas! LOL Wear appropriate interview attire.

Also make sure where your computer is, there’s nothing in the background to distract or offend the person doing the interviewing. I saw a person doing a skype interview and the background was an unmade bed…. not cool. Maybe sit on a couch or table with a plain wall behind you.

Keep a notepad and pen handy for note-taking, and don’t take notes on your computer — the sound of the keys can be very loud on the other end. Have a phone handy just in case, and offer the # to the interviewer in case something happens and Skype doesn’t work.

Assuming it’s a video call, try to look into the camera rather than at the picture of the person on your screen while you’re talking. If they’re asking a question or speaking it’s fine to watch them, but you can fake the “eye contact” by consciously looking into the little webcam.

Try to refrain from tapping, clicking, or making other nervous-type motions — they’re more visible on camera than in an office.

Wear regular interview clothing, but please NO patterns or sparkly jewelry! It’s very distracting.

It’s okay to keep a glass of water nearby, just excuse yourself and take a sip if you need to. Obviously no eating/gum-chewing.

Speak slowly! Assume there is a slight delay, and be sure the interviewer is finished speaking before you answer a question. If he/she asks you to repeat something, make sure your volume levels are up.

Try to relax, keep your thoughts in order, and best of luck!!

Resurrecting this because I have an interview next week, and I want to ask:

Will the interviewer think it weird if I wear my headphone/mic set during the interview? I just want to make sure everything I hear and say is clear, but maybe it will look odd?
