I’m a terrible insomniac as well.  I rely on Melatonin. All natural and non habit forming. 🙂

Yeah, melatonin is really great OTC.

I have TMJD and also back spasms, and have a revolving prescription for Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) from my doc. It’s a muscle relaxer, but it knocks me OUT for a good 4-6 hours, and I wake up feeling really refreshed. Maybe talk to your doctor about it if you want to go the Rx route.

Chamomile Tea works very well! I would be very careful with sleeping pills. I know people who have on accident killed themselves…

I am a chronic insomniac…I rely on generic Ambien and Melatonin.

Do you have a good doctor that really listens to you?

I like melatonin.  It can usually be found in the drug store with the supplements.

I’ve had some really bad insomnia in the past, and had to have my doctor prescribe sleeping pills.  Zolpidem (generic Ambien) worked really well.

@OrchidsandCandles:  Have you tried some medical marijuana? Are you drinking too much caffeine? Could you possibly do some meditation before sleep? I would try all other options. Are you low in B-12? B-12 deficiency has been linked to sleeping problems. Also, important minerals to aid in sleeping are magnesium, iron, and vitamin D. I hope this helps! Keep your mind open to trying new things.

I’m an insomniac too. The meds i take are for bipolar disorder (and they helpfully knock out the insomnia too) so I don’t have any problems now.

For insomnia treatment in earlier years I used Ambien and sometimes Xanax (habit forming, so not really a good idea). I had the same issue with dosage.

I don’t know if you’ve ever considered light therapy, but it’s supposedly effective. I use it to treat my bipolar disorder, but I know it helps with insomnia too. It just requires some patience. Check out this link ; it has some information about it.

Melatonin is a great option and natural.

OP I have read numerous threads of yours about various problems. I think you really need a good holistic physician who will help you balance everything without drugs. I don’t mean this in a mean way at all, but prescriptions upon prescriptions will not fix problems, but rather mask symptoms of something your body is trying to tell you to fix.

Another behavioral intervention that could help..do you do anything in bed at bedtime except sleep? Watch TV? Read a book? Surf the web? If you do, STOP. Also, if you find yourself laying in bed for more than 30 or so minutes unable to fall asleep, go to another room, do something for a while, then come back and try again.

Something about conditioning your brain that the bed is for sleeping.
