If you already have the diamond, I would use it. You can always get another ring later.

I would go for the moissanite! It won’t be very expensive and it will be the look you’re going for. 1.25 on a size 7 would be smaller than I’d like too.

maebelle :  definitely a genuine diamond over a diamond simulant any day!

A 1.25 carat diamond is a nice size.  Have you considered setting it in a halo setting for a larger look?

maebelle :  I would use the diamond, you could always get a moissanite later on if you then feel you need to? I just know that for me, if I were buying a moissanite and trying to pass it off as a diamond I would feel really self-conscious and like I was wearing a ‘fake’ ring. Now, I’m not saying that moissanites are fake, and I know the vast majority of people who wear them ARE NOT doing so as an imitation diamond but as a gemstone alternative to diamond. BUT it does seem like you would be buying a moissanite with the intention of doing so, so I’m just saying that if I were in your position I would feel weord about that.

maebelle :  go with the diamond. They have a beautiful sparkle. I hate moissanites. To me they look like iridescent gift wrap. They look just like the free gift bags at Bath and Body works. I guess that’s the rainbow 🌈 sparkle you mentioned.

mrstodd2bee :  Moissanites are diamond alternatives, not diamond simulants. No one would call a blue sapphire a diamond simulant, it’s the same concept.

maebelle :  My advice is to go with the diamond in this case. I’m a moissanite girl, but I love it for the unique double refraction and I’ll be proud to wear it as its own gemstone that is not a diamond.

But, my opinions aside, I don’t think you’d be happy because a moissanite of that size won’t look like a diamond no matter what cut and stone shape you go for. It will be a disco ball of rainbows.

And unless you’re in a position to afford a new diamond of that size, people may question it.

A diamond of that size will be stunning in a ring, and you are lucky to have that as an option. I’d go with that, you can always get a moissanite later as well if you still want a larger stone, or later you can upgrade the diamond size.

schmeebee85 :  A blue sapphire exists in nature, moissanite does not…. sure silicon carbide exists as a minuscule,  greenish mineral….moissanite is created with silicon carbide, other ingredients, hocus pocus (lol) to try to mimic a diamond.

Moissanite like Cz is definitely created to be a diamond simulant. …no question.

    Diamond > Diamond simulant.

100%, no question. I think a beautiful halo would help you get more finger coverage though.

The answer lies in your own words: “which is more diamond-like?” If you’re asking this, the chances are very high that you will be dissatisfied with moissanite. A 1.25ct diamond is by no means small, and you could always add a halo for a larger look.

Diamond all the way! You already have it which is awesome! I think 1.25 would look perfect on a size 6.5-7 but if you want more coverage add a halo!

schmeebee85 :  I think the difference in your analogy is that a blue sapphire is a colored gemstone so it doesn’t look at all like a diamond, while moissanite and diamond are both clear/colorless/white.
A blue sapphire looks nothing like a diamond, where moissanites were specifically altered to look like, or simulate a diamond. Hence the “simulant.”
