Who does the grocery shopping in your household?
I used to always do all of the grocery shopping. However, now that I am pregnant and have MS, I can’t really do much cooking. For the past couple of weeks DH has done most of the cooking and has come grocery shopping with me. When I moved in a couple years ago and we combined finances we discussed our budget. We decided on $100 for groceries each week. It can be difficult some times, but I manage to go below $100 the majority of the time. Well, the weeks I went over $100 (usually if I need to get stuff to bring to a party or BBQ) DH would always give me the “we discussed this” look and point at things and ask if we really need it.
Fastforward to today. DH wants to make a big pot of Chili tonight, so he decides to take charge of the grocery shopping. I went with him to help him out. Of course he starts seeing things and wanting them. He grabs some Hummus and Pita bread. Then he wants to try this new granola bar, then he decides he wants Bagels and cream cheese for breakfast, and then he gets some beer, and then some ice cream. I kept laughing to myself the whole time but let him do his thing. So we check out and the cashiere announces that it is $139. Haha. DH is like ‘really?’. I say thank you and take the recipt. I knew it was going to be that much because he got all those treats. Now he is apologizing for all the times I went over on the grocery budget and he said something. Ahh Pregnancy is awesome 🙂

We share it. I’m usually the one who buys extra treats. I’m also the one who plans & knows what goes in our meals. I love my Fiance but he’s a nightmare when it comes to choosing meals.

@MrsMath: Haha. I love it! Now he gets a taste of what it’s really like.
I’ve done all the grocery shopping when we’ve had extended visits together (we’re in an LDR). He’ll pick up a few things here and there if I ask, but otherwise it’s me. I’m the main cook though, so he wouldn’t know what to get anyways. I imagine it will be the same when we are married.

We live just around the corner from a great grocery store, so I tend to go there 3-5 times a week to get fresh produce for meals and we go there together on weekends to get more of the basics. My husband will go to Costco a few times a month because it’s close to his work.

I’m a teacher and I work usually 12 hours a day, plus some time on the weekends. Here’s how we do it:
1. I meal plan and send the week’s recipes to both of us in an email.
2. I make the shopping list, separating things to buy into different sections of the store (produce / meat / dairy, etc).
3. He shops for the week on Sunday.
Easy peasy! Took a while to come up with a good system, though.

I do. DH works from home full-time and I currently don’t work, so I do all the cooking/cleaning/shopping/etc. it works well that way as I can be kind of fussy about what I eat, and I love to cook! Also DH, is a wonderful guy but cleanliness isn’t his strong suit. 😉

Usually we shop together for the “big” shopping trips (about once every 3 weeks), but both of us tend to drop by the store individually if there’s only a couple things we need. I would say I do the majority of it though.

@MrsMath: When we first started living together, I would usually just ask FH to go pick up things after work, but he was awful about buying things that weren’t on the list. Our rule has always been if it isn’t on the list, we don’t buy it. Now we go together, so it makes things easier. FH doesn’t get to deviate from the list, and he finds all the good deals on what we do buy.

I do the shopping, I sent him to the grocery store last week and he somehow managed to spend $100 on a tiny amount of groceries. He also nearly always gets the wrong things.

Haha that’s funny.
I usually go shopping alone, I can barely get my husband to go out and get my one thing if I’m in the middle of cooking.

I do most of the big shopping trips, but H is great about picking up a few things on the way home if I am running low. I am also more picky about brands and like to go to to specific stores for specific things.

@MrsMath: Let’s see if the look dares to come out in the future. lol
We both like to grocery shop together, but really it comes down to who has more time that week. If DH goes alone, I learned that I have to send him a grocery list because he never checks the pantry or fridge before he goes. In the beginning of our living together, we’d end up with twos of the basic staples like eggs or milk when he went to the gorcery store.
