cbpokrz85:  That is stunning!

To the OP: I knew nothing about diamonds or gemstones before we got engaged. All I knew is that I wanted to be engaged to Fiance and I didn’t want him to spend a lot of money. We settled on a tiny colored diamond ring from a local jeweler. Holy crap, so many unsolicited comments about how dainty the ring was, and questions about whether we were engaged since they couldn’t tell if my ring was an engagement ring. Um, I just told you I was engaged and there is a ring on my left ring finger. “Well it doesn’t look like an engagement ring.”

Funny thing is, after we got engaged, I was gifted a diamond solitaire from a family member. This ring gets zero comments, it just tells people I’m engaged. I like that about it, since I’m pretty private about wedding stuff.  Even though I loved my first e-ring, it was annoying the crap out of me to discuss it with everyone. It does make me sad that in the US, people think a ring has to look a certain way to be impressive.  No regrets about my original ring though. I alternate wearing it with the other ring.

Diamonds are so ridiculously expensive. I don’t really get the obsession with them. I mean, pretty yes. If I had unlimited funds, I’d probably get an anniversary ring in ten years that’s just a pretty 2 carat princess cut. But I don’t have unlimited funds, and my enjoyment of something is strongly tied to how much I can afford it. If someone gave it to me (like my solitaire) I will happily wear it. If Fiance or I have to pay for it, no way!

Yipeebee:  There is a quote in Anne of Green Gables, where Anne is talking about Marilla’s amethyst broach.

“I think amethysts are just sweet. They are what I used to think diamonds were like. Long ago, before I had ever seen a diamond, I read about them and I tried to imagine what they would be like. I though they would be lovely glimmering purple stones. When I saw a real diamond in a lady’s ring one day I was so disappointed I cried. Of course, it was very lovely, but it wasn’t my idea of a diamond.”

I like diamonds, and I like seeing other people’s diamond rings, but they don’t make me sing. When I first saw a sapphire engagement ring, I knew instantly that that’s what I wanted. A diamond would have paled in comparison for me.

Yipeebee:  When I got engaged I also got tanzanite. It’s my birthstone and I love it. Fiance recently upgraded my ring to a diamond after his parents made fun of him for not buying me a “real” ring. I still wear my tanzanite all the time.untitled_(47_of_49)

I never understand people who say that rings with gemstones aren’t “real” engagement rings! What does that even mean?? I haven’t gotten any negative comments about my sapphire. But if anything does come up, I just mention that I’m just not a diamond girl.

I’m very happy with my non-diamond stone 🙂 The only things Fiance knew I really wanted was something white/clear and something that could handle every day wear (so not something too delicate). He went with a colorless sapphire and it’s perfect. I love that it’s traditional looking, it’s sparkle and shine, that it’s the second hardest gemstone next to diamonds, and it’s unique rarity. I’ve seen other ladies with colored gemstones on their rings and they’ve always been beautiful, and I find it very strange that we’re still at the point where many folks continue to deem them as not “real” engagement rings.
