Yipeebee:  For me (and I’m not saying you), it was never about non-conformity. But a diamond solitaire would have beent he antithesis of everything that I was looking for. I love looking at diamonds and think they are beautiful, but something was always missing.

I remember before my husband and I were engaged, I was talking to my mom about what I was considering for a ring. I mentioned that I was looking at sapphires. I was wondering what her reactions would be, but she said that she thought they were beautiful. For some reason I was worried about what she would say – probably from reading too many threads here on the bee. lol.

Out of all my friends that are engaged (the four of us?)  Two have diamonds and two have ‘other’.  For me, my Aquamarine was something I’d always wanted and for the most part, anybody that knows me has said ‘That fits you so well, you’ve never been one to do things the traditional way!’ <– I take that as a compliment.  My other friend has a Morganite and she loves it, she specified that’s what she wanted and that’s what she got.

The other friend is a traditional type of girl, and that’s okay.  She has a nice, dainty diamond with a halo and a wedding band to match and plans on getting another ring for her ten year to match on the other side.  Perfect for her.  She’s happy.

My other friend would have been happier if the money that was spent on the diamond went towards something useful.  Like a tractor.  Or a canoe.

I’m not even kidding.

So it all depends on you and what you love.  Screw people who tell you your ring isn’t an engagement ring.  A bunch of strands of grass braided together could be an engagement ring if you really wanted it to be.  My response to people who question my stone choice, is that I’m not interested in diamonds, and I’m not a girl that’s traditional.  Then proceed to ramble off all of the ‘traditions’ I’m eschewing at my wedding.  I either get a look of total shock or a look of admiration.   :D!

Yipeebee:  I recently bought 8 copies of blood diamond and will be sending them to our family members who don’t think my reasoning is good enough to not want a diamond. I know that sounds silly but yeah getting my point accross.

I LOVE your ring!! Its beautiful!! I personally have a diamond and I’m obsessed with it, but gems are gorgeous too! I cannot believe people would actually put you down about it. That’s so rude!! People are so mean sometimes. I could never imagine insulting someone’s ring like that 🙁 I’m so happy you love it though! It’s so pretty

mildlybookish:  It’s a direct insult as if diamonds are the only acceptable stone. Sillyness! You can have a completely stoneless engagement ring as it still symbolizes the same thing

Yipeebee:  I was 15 when that movie came out and I saw it with my mom and sister I bawled through the whole thing. Never has a movie affected me as much as Blood Diamond has. His brother totally said “wow i can’t believe you got her that! It’s a cracker jack ring!” but reallyto me my rings well they are both beautiful. I have two both topaz because it has meaning to me. and i love them. Fiance respects my choice and his wallet loves me for it lol

Nope–no regrets.  This is my Valentine anniversary upgrade.  I love the look of all rings in all combinations.  Ive only had a few snide comments by my SIL about me thinking I’m a princess because of the design, but most are favorable.  Love all the rings on this thread:)
