So I’ve looked at hundreds of photographers and can’t find what I’m looking for. Well, I finally did find a great one but I made the mistake of posting a question on here about this photographer and coincidentally, 24 hours later when I decided I wanted to book this person … they had just been booked! 🙁 I have a sick feeling that it was because I posted about them and someone snatched them up. TOTALLY MY FAULT 🙁 I’m kicking myself for this, believe me.
I think the problem boils down to the fact that we have a limited photography budget but our tastes run towards the expensive photogs. It’s kind of the same thing that happened to me with my dress. The more I looked, the more I liked the most expensive wedding dresses. LOL.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve found a lot of talented, amazing photographers, but I’m just looking for something a little different. Someone with a sense of humor and a GREAT sense of style.
I WILL find someone, right?! 🙁 so discouraged….

When and where are you getting married? The photographer that did my sisters wedding was phenomenal and I even booked her for my wedding in October. Her name is Jody Yorston. Check her website out. =) Good luck with your search.

There are some other options you can explore. Try checking out photographers in different states. Those photogs in small cities usually charge WAY less and sometimes even if you add the travel fee it’s still cheaper than the big city folks.

I don’t know your budget- but what about Kimberly Salem or Susan Stripling? They are both in the city but travel in the NY area.

If I were you I’d do three things:
1) look at photogs maybe 2-4 hours away and see if it might be cheaper to get (for example) a PA photog to travel rather than a NYC photog.
2) Consider getting a photographer you LOVE that is more expensive, but for less time. Don’t order any prints or albums, just get digital rights. Don’t do a whole day, just get 6 hours.
3) Figure out how far the gap between what you want and what you have is. If photography is THIS important to you and its a matter of 1 or 2k… can you make that up somewhere else? skimp on something? skip something? or alternatively MAKE that much before the wedding? take a second job temporarily or something?

I am a wedding photographer in CA, and I will get lots of people asking about the same dates, but it’s really stressful trying to wait around to see if people were super interested or just kind of, or not at all, so I generally try to get the calendar as full as possible, as soon as possible so that I know I will be able to cover my bills that month.
Anyway, I’d look at all of the work that you can, even the ones that are out of your budget, and then I’d just start inquiring, or calling therm even. They are probably just editing photos all day and could take a phone call really quickly and get you info faster than email… Even if the ones you like are booked, or out of your price range, they will probably have friends that they can recommend who have a similar style. This might be a good angle. Great photographers always have lots of great friends…
Hope that helps,

Definetly contact the gal you wanted to book with and ask her for recs!

If you’re looking for a NY area photog, definitely check out NY Magazine’s Wedding edition–they have a ton of good recommendations and it’s a good starting point. But I also agree with @SanDiegoAli and ask the photog you wanted for recommendations.

The photographer you want should be able to recommend others that do similar-quality work.
I agree with Corgi that you can have less time, order only a full-rights CD, etc.
Are you going to be using a videographer? (Some bees do, some don’t.) If you are, photographers and videographers often work together and offer a discount if you book both. Of course, if you aren’t doing video, this won’t help.
And if all else fails, keep looking. You WILL find a photographer you love who fits in your price range.

I agree with Gemstone, you should be able to get at least a couple referrals from the photographer who is currently booked.
If not, I’d recommend checking out VT or Western Mass shooters for availability. It may be a bit tough given the short notice and the business of August for a wedding photographer. But just keep searching.

Have you tried searching on craigslist?? Like you, I had/have a limited budget but expensive taste.. I found a lot of the postings on there were really cheesy/lame/look like they were taken with a point and shoot camera… but after spending at least 60+ hours scouring the internet I found my dream photographer! Just an idea if you are still searching. 🙂 Good luck!!

Are you really getting married this August? When did you start looking for photographers? Most in my area are booked a year in advance! At this point, I would try looking for talented photography students or recent grads. SHort of cancellations, you are going to have a very hard time.

Have you tried looking on snapknot.com? You can search my budget.
