I can’t tell anyone about this yet so I wanted to share here because I have to say something to somebody!
I took a huge risk leaving the world of finance and taking a contract job in a not for profit last year – it had an end date, and the permanent person was going to come back. Well today I learned my predecessor got a promotion and the job I’m in (my dream job!) is mine if I want it!!!! It hasn’t been announced yet and there’s still some official business to take care of but by the end of the month I could be permanent, full time, benefits, working at a level in line with my education and experience, helping building the community in which I live. I am speechless!
I am so, so, so relieved (especially with all the wedding deposits coming up).. I feel like once this becomes official I will have actually “made it.” I am so, so grateful I stuck to my guns and didn’t give up pursuing and studying the things I loved, despite other people telling me I was a nut.
So keep at it ladies!! The only way you’ll have a career doing what you love is if you pursue it, and take opportunities when they come to you.. even if they’re imperfect. Thank you for reading and letting me share.. I just had to tell someone and I’m not allowed to say anything in my organization just yet.

Congratulations. This is what I was referring to in my “Risky Career Moves” post:
I know if I take a temp to perm or a contract position, I will lose the wonderful benefits I have at my current full time job but I will finally be doing what I want to do, not letting my skills waste away and will eventually make great money. Thanks for sharing your story it looks like taking that risk worked for you!

Thank you thank you thank you! It feels so good to share it with someone! The announcement of the promotion just went out and many of my colleagues have come up to me excited because they know it means it’s 99% sure I’m sticking around! My goodness, being respected in your job makes such a huge difference in your overall happiness in life!
@chillinchillin: I work for a charity and I manage all of our internal and external education programs.. curricula, training, etc. I also manage a large volunteer component as well.
@MrsWe: I left a FT, with benefits and everything, at a large financial institution. I am so glad I did. I am so much happier knowing every day I come home and the work I’ve done has made a difference. I honestly never realized what a weight being a useless member of society for eight hours a day was.. I didn’t see the toll it was taking. Now it was literally evaporated. I work harder and longer than I used to, but I have energy to go out with friends, exercise, pursue hobbies.. my relationship is so much better because I feel so much lighter and happier. I feel like now that it’s almost permanent I can breathe freely again haha
