@WillyNilly:  Nope, never heard of this, but then a lot of the things they told me about braces turned out to be wrong. I was told it would take 2 years to move my teeth, it took slightly less than 1 because my teeth moved so fast. I was also told that I only had to wear my retainer at night until the end of highschool. Ha I’ve graduated college now and I still have to wear it or my teeth move on me.

@WillyNilly:  Um. No. That’s scary. I have a fear of dentists.

@WillyNilly:  They should tell people that kind of shit before they pay a couple grand on braces. Good grief. hahah I bet your floating on clouds right now. I have never had a root canal. *Knock on wood*

@WillyNilly:  Nope, no permanent retainers at all. I wear top and bottom to bed everynight. It’s not really to bottom teeth that are a problem anyway. My front teeth used to overlap because of the way my eye-teeth were rotated. My left eye tooth keeps trying to rotate back and has managed to push my left front tooth slightly forward. If I don’t wear the retainer for a few days my teeth don’t match up when I bite down…sigh

That’s crazy!  I still have to wear my plastic retainers and I got braces off before high school.  And they didn’t even set my bite up properly with all that junk so my teeth don’t chew well at all.

That’s crazy scary! I’ve never heard that.

And I don’t wear my retainers anymore, my teeth must have shifted and they don’t fit. :/

Any trauma can eventually cause a tooth to die, and one of them could have been a simple filling. If the braces were the cause, wouldn’t all of them have died by now?

He may have meant that your teeth were moved too quickly before the apex (base) of the tooth had closed, thus leaving it susceptible to bacteria. It can be evident on xrays post ortho, if the ends of the roots are indeed still open. That’s why when they tell you how long your treatment is expected to take, it can’t be rushed. Bone needs to fill in behind the teeth as they are moved, or sometimes the bite will be out of alignment and other periodontal problems can be caused by this.

Why would you be told something like this in the first place? Were you questioning what caused the tooth to die? There can be many reasons, so I’m surprised he would pick the ortho. Was the filling in the tooth large?

The PP is right, couldnt have said it better!  I agree I find it hard he picked ortho as a reason the tooth died as there are MANY more reasons before that why teeth die , but just because ive never heard of it as a problem doesnt mean its not , I have just not come across it  x

I have permanent retainers on both my top and bottom teeth, and my teeth STILL moved.  I have one on the bottom that has moved a lot, and my slight overbite came back.  Annoying.  I think my problem might have been my choice of orthodontist.  I have since heard that he is not the best in town.  I only had my braces for 1 year, 4 months, where a lot of my friends had them for 2-3 years.  I think they were taken off too early, before my teeth had really adjusted to their new positions.  Oh well.  I’m not super happy with my teeth, but not unhappy enough to get braces again.  Every once in a while, I think about maybe doing InvisAlign, but there always seems to be many different places that money should go to first.  🙂
