So, thanks to Fiance being born in some podunk town in Upstate, NY, we now have to wait to apply for our passports (well he does atleast but we didn’t bother going through with mine if he couldn’t apply). Apparently in said podunk town they don’t list the parents names on the birth certificate (um, what!?) so considering those are needed to apply for a passport, we now have to request a new one and HOPE that the new document will be correct. Talk about annoying! Thanks to this we now have to pay a $52 fee to get the replacement birth certificate as well as an expedite fee of who knows how much AND more than likely the passport expedite fee of an additional $120!
Seriously podunk town, f*ck you! Get your act together or shut down completely.

@melisslp: Double Ughh!! You know what’s even more annoying… it appears that Future Mother-In-Law knew that the “birth certificate” (which btw, looks like it could have been made in Word) wouldn’t be accepted. She didn’t come out and say that but her reply when Fiance called was certainly not that of shock.

@UpstateCait: Why in the world wouldn’t they put the parent’s names on the birth certificate. So the baby belongs to nobody? WTF that like blows my mind. Sorry about your passports I know you need them like ASAP.

I was born in a podunk town which subsequently merged into another town and then into a different county. Try applying for a passport when your town doesn’t even exist anymore!

Sucky! Luckily we didn;t need the names of parents on the birth certificate for adults, here in canada. I hope it all comes in rather quickly for you, thats gotta be stressful!!!

Yikes…I would atleast apply for your passport so you can avoid paying the expidited fees on both of them.
Totally lame 🙁 I’m sorry this is such a hassle!

@Mrs.ChubbyBunny: Yea, thats what I said! I asked him what he used to apply for his drivers license and he said they accepted the birth certificate that he had. I don’t get it.
@smith2be: Wow! Super sucky!
@Cash000: Definitely stressful. We leave for our Honeymoon in 12 weeks and we were really hoping to avoid the expedite passport fees. *sigh* Not gonna happen now.

@JsDragonfly: I’m totally kicking myself for not applying for mine today. I guess I was just annoyed and emotional and wanted to get out of there. I think I’ll go to the post office tomorrow and apply there.

Um, I know you guys are going on a cruise, but do you have to have a passport? I believe on closed loop cruises leaving from the United States a certified copy of your birth certificate will do. They just strongly suggest a passport in case something happens and you would have to fly. When doing my cruise documents, we can say we just have a certified copy of our birth certificate. We are leaving from Miami and even though two of our ports are part of the US, two ports aren’t. You may want to check on that. It might save you the headache from getting a passport, but doesn’t save you from getting the bc from the podunk town.

Oh and another thing, you may want to look at the window of time after getting your passport that you can change your name for no fee, that is if you are changing your name. I think within a certain amount of time of getting your passport, if you get married and change your name, there is no cost or a very minimal cost of changing your name on your passport.

@calico61979: If you change your name within a year of getting a passport, you can change it for free.
And CaitMarie, I’m sorry things are so screwed up! I can’t believe your Future Mother-In-Law didn’t tell you!
