And I just realized a said you need one gallon per inch earlier. That is wrong. You need 10 gallons per inch.

@delovelyjenn: is right, you’ll need all that for a painted or a red eared slider. Basically, your aquatic turtle pet (vs a box turtle).

@stardustintheeyes: FI rehomed his three turtles when we moved in together (he chose to keep the snakes & lizard since we have limited space). But before that, he actually made money with them by making them paint and selling the artwork. It was pretty cute. (And don’t worry, it was completely non-toxic, safe paint. He’d never harm an animal.)

Just make sure not to underestimate the space they need. And I don’t care what a pet store tries to tell you, a docking space with UVA/UVB and heat is so important… And big gravel not small fish gravel. I have heard pet store workers telling people the turtles only need a heat lamp and nothing else and that small gravel is fine… It is not. So be careful!

@stardustintheeyes:  They do have personalities! When mine sees me he starts swimming at me and opening his mouth and I like to tell myself he’s saying “heeey mom!”  I got him this thing and he LOVES it:

Just as a warning– turtles will live FOREVER! Or at least ours (well, DH’s) did. DH had him for 23 years before he died in February. Just be prepared to send the turtle to college with your son, or to be in charge of taking care of it when he moves out. Haha.

@Mrs Hedgehog:  Thanks!  It is pretty awesome.  The top part is made of plastic then theres this metal grate type thing that fits on top where you can take it off and have an open hole if you want and that’s where the light goes in.  There’s a place beside it to clamp the light.  I have to leave the grate on because mine climbs out. 🙂

I haven’t read all the replies, but you definitely need special lights for them.  I believe it’s separate UVA and UVB lights, but I’m not 100% sure (it’s been a while since we got them for our turtle).  You should also get a water heater to keep the temps warm so he doesn’t go into hibernation.  Oh, and calcium!  You can give them cuttle bones for that or dust their food with calcium powder (but that tends to fall off in the water).

I have no advice for you except that 1. My mom wouldn’t let me get a turtle when I was little, despite my begging, because they apparently can transport samonella..so wash your hands after handling him! and 2. this post made me laugh. He may have given you the stink eye.
