oWhat if you sign up to take a financial literacy class with him? Play like it’s for you, if it would cause him to react, and go. There you will be told about the importance of budgeting, saving, emergency accounts, retirement plans, etc. You might even do financial questionnaires.

My dh was very honest about me with his lack of money knowledge when we met, but was also very excited to learn. I made him watch til debt do us part, we read some books together and did a few ‘get to know your partner’s surveys.

If he isn’t saving at least ten percent of what he makes, doesn’t have an emergency fund and blows money on ‘wants’, you likely want to deal with this BEFORE any engagement occurs.

I think you need to sit down and tell him what you expect from him.  If you don’t have joint finances, you don’t have much control over his spending.  At the same time, let him know you’d like to have input on large purchases, even if they aren’t for both of your use.

Like PP said, maybe taking a financial responsibility class would be helpful for you two!

@ladyartichoke:  I think you’re being really level-headed about this.  Just tell him you were shocked to see such a large purchase made when getting tickets to visit your dad has been an obstacle.  There’s a difference between nagging him, and showing him he has to make the important things a priority.  Good luck!
