I am so stressed out bees and could really use some advice, or even just a place to vent.
Darling Husband and I have been renting an apartment for almost 3 years. When we moved in we paid $500 a week, and we now pay $525.
Our lease expired in February, and for the 2 months before it was due to expire, I was emailing our agent asking if we could renew the lease. They said they would get back to me. We just let it tick on.
3 weeks ago the agent emailed saying the landlord had agreed to renew our lease for 12 months. In the first 6 months rent would stay the same, in the following 6 months it would increase by $15.
Darling Husband and I said no, identical units in our building were leasing for $500 and we already were paying more by $25. After a lot of back and forth, they agreed to a 6 months extension with no increase.
The lease arrived in the mail on Friday and said the rent would be $540. We thought this was a misunderstanding and emailed today asking what was going on. The real estate advised that in December we were sent a letter notifying us that our rent would go up to $540 from February. Our rent is taken from our account, we checked and only $525 has been taken.
Darling Husband called today and the landlord is insisting we pay $540. I’ve gone back to school and only work part time, and we currently have NO savings. We can’t afford to move plus we are both in the middle of university right before exams.
A unit in our building is available, it is the same unit as ours (3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 garage) and has an asking price of $495!! But we don’t have the money for the bond.
I am just so stressed. Moving is stressful enough without having to worry about affording it!
