@dannielle89:  I’m sorry to hear you’re going through with this. Are all the units owned or operated by the same landlord? If so, could you see if the bond (which I’m assuming is the deposit) that you have on your current unit be transferable to the other cheaper unit? Include the fact that they are refusing to honor their first offer to you regarding the 6 month lease extension with no increase. I’d attach the email you have from the leasing agent that states this. If you’ve been a model tenant for the last three years, include this in the letter as well. What is the occupancy rate of your area? If the units in your place are not high in demand, then the landlord may be willing to work with you bc they rather have a tenant in the unit than to see it sit empty and lose income.

@dannielle89:  Ugh that sucks.  I totally don’t miss the stress of renting.  First of all, legally if you have a document that says rent can be XXX, I’m pretty sure there are legal requirements that they can’t suddenly pull a switch on you!  Are you going through an agency?  They should be able to inform you of your legal rights.  Or look at someone else who can help, I found these people: http://www.tenants.org.au/

It must suck seeing cheaper rent elsewhere in the building.  Bond (& having to pay four weeks up front) is hideous 🙁

And rent in Sydney is ridiculous anyway!  It’s been four years since I lived there (wow, can’t believe it’s that long) and I can’t believe how much they’ve jumped 🙁
