So for the past year and a half I’ve been staying at my place with very few incidents. Yesterday afternoon I noticed some ants crawling around my apartment so I sent an email and let the front desk know. They responded promptly, an exterminator will be out at 1:45 on Friday. I write back and say that’ll be great. Awesome. I go to class and forget about it.
About four hours later I come home and there’s two notices on my door. One from the pest company saying they came in and sprayed (???? You were supposed to come Friday!!!) and a second letter from my apartment bitching about my “unsanitary living conditions that were reported by the pest company and will be investigated by (apartment name personnel) on Monday.” The letter further warned I would be getting unannounced inspections for six months because of my “poor housekeeping.” These “unsanitary living conditions” included “food on the floor and in every room of the house, trash everywhere etc etc” and because of the “filth” the ant treatments would be “unsuccessful” and he would need to come back next week to spray again.
Now here’s the kicker. None of these things were true.
I immediately started looking around my apartment for wtf the exterminator could have been talking about. I had dishes out from last night that I hadn’t done, but they were all in the kitchen, not even in the dining room where I eat and in no other room of the house. I had a couple of packages that were unopened (for my resell business) and ONE bag of trash IN THE TRASH CAN. I checked all over the apartment for more food and apart from a few crumbs and some clothes on the floor, I found nothing except an EMPTY bag of hershey’s kisses by my bedside table. In fact my bathroom had just been scrubbed top to bottom two days ago!
I talked with my boyfriend and we googled with pest company and they seem to have a reputation for overbilling and finding problems that just “have to be fixed” so they can come back and bill more. We are sure that’s what happened here because there is no way my apartment was “so unsanitary as to cause maintence problems,” not even close. We are sure the exterminator was lying to try and book another visit and bill twice. His allegations were never inspected by the apartment complex personnel before sending me an extremely nasty letter with unfounded accusations and, perhaps the most damning evidence of all, the exterminator’s treatments WORKED. I have not seen one single ant since he sprayed and since there is NOT “food everywhere” as he lied about, I doubt I will see anymore.
This is the first time I have EVER had an infestation. I was so shocked I was sure my landlord had put the letter on the wrong apartment, but it had my number on it and the pest company had come by today.
So for the TLDR crowd:
1. I call and report a pest problem for the first time in 2 years.
2. Apartment writes back and tells me I have an appt for 1:45 on Friday
3. Exterminator comes FOUR HOURS LATER on THURSDAY without my knowledge or consent (i had money and valuables lying around that I had wanted to hide on Friday)
4. Exterminator lies about my apartment condition and says his treatments won’t work to (we think) try and get paid for a second visit next week
5. Apartment does not investigate his allegations for themselves, instead they send me a threatening letter promising unannounced checks every 6 months and threatening eviction without even going in to see for themselves if what he said was true.
What do I do? I don’t want unnanounced inspections like I’m in a friggin dorm again, I don’t want strangers waltzing through my apartment unnanounced and constantly having to hide my valuables (it already happened once, the appt was for Friday and he came Thursday). I hate renting 🙁
