So I was having lunch with my dad yesterday and I mentioned that SO asked for my ring size. My dad and I are pretty honest with each other about everything, and he always asks about my relationship with SO. I know SO is going to ask for my parents’ blessing before he proposes, so I wanted my dad to hear about it from me first. I wanted him to know that this is something I have thought about for a while and am ready for and not to feel like it came out of nowhere (which he would if I had never said anything), if that makes sense.
Anyway, I should also mention that my parents divorced when I was four and my mom remarried when I was in fifth grade. My stepdad is awesome, he has treated my brother and me like his own, and he and my mom are still head-over-heels for each other 15 years later. Although my dad is on friendly terms with both my mom and stepdad, when they got married, my dad told me, “Remember that you only have one dad.” He was worried about being replaced and I have always carried that around with me.
So, dad and I are having lunch and he said that it’s our lives and SO doesn’t need his blessing, although he still appreciates the gesture. He said, “As long as I get to walk you down the aisle, I’m happy.” Then I said, “As long as you don’t mind sharing with (stepdad)” and waited tensely for his response… He replied, “Frankly, I would be uncomfortable if we didn’t. He’s a great guy, I really respect him, and he’s been a very important part of your life.”
Just thinking about it makes me tear up all over again!!! I’m so relieved and touched that I get to have both my dad and my stepdad walk me down the aisle when the time comes 🙂

@Regina Phalange: Aww that’s so touching, and it’s so so meaningful that he takes your stepdad into consideration, he is your dad after all and he could be all “she’s mine and I won’t share her”, so he thnking about how important your SD is for you is really something.
And yes what a relieve to know that’s he’s so on board with it. Lucky girl.
