So lots of pictures and debates recently so though I would post a poll
Which back is your favorite – not necessarily the dress you have but which look do you prefer?
There is no better or judgement here – just a matter of personal taste – I have seen gowns in all price ranges and styles with different back fasteners

I voted for corsets with modesty panels, but I LOVE the look of well-done buttons (either with or without a zipper, though I would probably prefer the zipper for convenience). They’re both fantastic on the right dress.

I voted for corsets with modesty panels. I also LOVE buttons, though. Wish we could pick two! 🙂

I hate corsets. I really love the look of buttons but I can see how they can be a lot of work.. especially those tiny ones! I voted for zippers–yes, I know, Im lame lol

zipper covered with buttons 🙂

I loved my corset. My seamstress says that alterations are always less on those dresses since you an fluctuate in weight either way by 10lbs or more without having to have anything taken in or let out. It was so comfy too.
I didn’t use the modesty panel.

Zippers covered with buttons! I’ve seen all options done beautifully though.

I really like the look of buttons but my dress actually had a corset and I liked the versatility. I think I would have been paranoid about the fit if I didn’t have the ability to tighten and loosen the dress.

I love corsets with modesty panels. Zippers just didn’t give enough “play” in the dress for me, and was always too tight in all the wrong places.
But I agree with PP’s I love a good button down back as well!

I love corset backs, but I wanted a short dress and there are very few with lace-up backs so I had to settle for a hidden zipper.

Lace-up closures don’t seem to appear in too many higher end lines except for the ones that do looks that are supposed to be corset-y all the way around (Pnina; Atelier Aimee).
On one episode of Amsale Girls there was a bride who wanted to have a corset substituted for a zipper, and they were like, “Uh, no…that’s not something we do to our dresses.” I think lace -ups can be pretty and work for girls that are unsure of their wedding day weight. But I think buttons are more elegant if you have a boned bodice.

@GreenEyedMoon: Agreed! I probably would have opted for something like a combo corset/button look if I could get the same hourglass look.
For me the fit, comfort (yes I like it tight) and hourglass appearance of the corset won me over. I love buttons too, don’t get me wrong, just couldn’t find a dress with buttons that fit me the way the corset did.

Mine had hooks and eyes. But we wanted to maintain the original integrity of the dress, which included having hooks and eyes. If I could do it differently, I would have installed a zipper, because the back kept bunching on me.

Zipper with buttons! I used to be into corset-style tops when I was a teenager and now I’m totally over anything that laces up.
ETA: My dress had enough boning and structure in it that it cinched me in in all the right places anyway.
