Maybe try smaller, independant shops and see what kind of reception you get, I found a few small shops were rude but most took more time with me to look at things that were what I wanted, not what people push on you, and things within my budget. I think that’s because they rely more on referrals than big companies with big advertising budgets.

Post your location and you might get the names of some shops. Here in DC, I just had a *fantastic* experience at Christian Alexander (Falls Church/DC Suburbs). My ring is also an uncommon shape and I had no clue what would look right with it. Sales staff was super helpful and very nice, not a bit pushy, and our sales lady had two or three suggestions, all custom but she did have samples. We’ll pick them up in 3 weeks. Came in right along my budget, too.

If you get up to NoVa, PM me and I’ll send the sales lady’s name. They’re right on Route 7 near the backside of the Home Depot. The only downside is I had to leave my engagement ring with them, so they can replicate some very intricate carving on the band, but in the grand scheme of things, that’s not a big deal. I feel naked without it, but I’d MUCH rather them have it handy to use as a reference guide!

I would go the independent jeweler route. I had lots of bad luck with the mall jewelry stores so I started going to independent jewelers and loved them. We will probably be customers for life at the place we bought my engagement ring from.
