My SO and I went to look at engagement rings yesterday. Yay! His idea and everything! We’ve been together for 8 years and I’ve been waiting for about…maybe 4 or 5? So needless to say, I’m beyond excited. We’ve gone window shopping before, and I’ve tossed out the idea of Moissanite before, but he doesn’t trust the reviews so we are now looking at diamonds.
So we went to a local jeweler first. Bees. I found my dream ring. The ring I’ve been drooling over since I first wanted to get engaged. A nice round center diamond with a very thin band of side diamonds. Lots of Bees on here have similar rings. My SO’s budget is between $2000-$3000. The first one they showed us had a center diamond that was just under half a carat, plus the side diamonds [I think it was about half a carat worth of side diamonds as well]. This ring was just under $3000. Then, if we wanted a slightly bigger center, we could get just under 0.70 with the side diamonds for just over $3000. And Bees, these diamonds were beautiful. White, white, white. They looked to be very high quality. I’ve done A LOT of research in my waiting time and these were nice. At one point, my best friend and I actually went browsing at a mall and something similar was $5000. I’m no expert, but I thought the local jeweler could give us a pretty good deal.
Then we went to the mall. We stopped at one store, and something similar with half a carat… was $6000! Pretty sure my jaw hit the floor. Then we went to a couple other stores. There were a few nice ones, but I found the quality to be quite different. I felt like a lot of the diamonds we looked at in the mall were very… grey looking. There were a couple others where the diamond just looked totally different, I don’t even know how to explain it. Just not very clear, maybe? I’m sure you guys have gone to the mall stores and have seen the varying looks.
Anyway, so a few of the mall ones we looked at were very cheap. Even my SO at one point wondered out loud why they were so cheap. What was wrong with them. So, I figured maybe this was a good sign for that first one we looked at.
Now, however, my SO is saying he thinks the first place we looked at was a ripoff. I’ve tried explaining that there’s different levels of quality, but I don’t know how to explain it further. He thinks that since some of the rings at the mall were so cheap, that we could just customize it, get a bit more and that would take him to like $2000. My feeling is that if we try to customize it at the mall, the diamond quality still won’t be the same AND also I’m pretty sure that if we did something even remotely similar to what we saw at the local jeweler, it would probably put the price to at least $4000. If I’m going by what I’ve seen before.
I know it’s not all about the ring, don’t get me wrong. But as you guys know, we wear these babies forever. I also don’t want him spending a crapload of money on a lower quality diamond. I don’t want him thinking he’s getting a good deal, when really he isn’t. He doesn’t know a thing about diamonds.
How do I navigate this? Thanks in advance! 🙂
