I found my own job as a salon receptionist, except that they screwed up my hourly wage (tried to pay me less than they’d promised and hoped I didn’t notice), killed my hours (I was literally working about 9 hours a week), and then hired someone else and let me go after three weeks. Oh, they took me to a hair show and everyone ignored me for two days. The day I worked after we came back, they let me do my “rounds” (checking the coffee, bathroom, waiting area, etc.) and then called me into the owner’s office and let me go. Thankfully, I got part of the GI Bill that allowed me to not work and finish school but still pay my bills. I kept applying for jobs (even minimum wage retail jobs), but nothing. I applied at every temp agency in the area after I graduated and got a job through one of those, but got laid off after 9 months (the company went out of business shortly after that). The temp agency couldn’t find me ANYTHING after that, until another company needed a receptionist ASAP because theirs had disappeared. I ended up getting hired in here, but unfortunately, I work 40 hours a week and am considered part time, so the pay isn’t very good + no benefits.
It could be worse, I guess, but it does really get to you. And what your friend said was really rude. It’s the job market, but it’s getting better. It just sucks for people like us, you know?
