This happend to me for the first time last weekend…twice.

I looked at my bf and said “yeah?…when are we getting married?”

I am lucky that he wants to get married and awnserd ”only a matter of time now”

I can see how it could get to be annoying, but I saw it as a chance to get his brain jump started! Laughing

I hate that question!!! Makes me want to cry or something haha, like I’M not already agonizing over that question.

This is why I am hoping to be engaged before or at Christmas because I have a HUGE extended family and guarantee EVERYONE will ask me this.

@bRooklynRocks: I’m thinking those are the reactions that I will get 🙁

And I’m getting it from EVERYWHERE! Friends, my dad, my grandma, cousins…. sigh…

Oh gosh this used to annoy me so much, but that’s not the only reason I NEVER say anything to people about it.

Once my Mother-In-Law told DH and I that our friends who were about to visit us for the weekend had gotten engaged. We asked her if she was sure since we hadn’t seen any facebook updates or gotten a call, and she said yes 100% certain and told us the whole engagement story.

So the couple arrived and I immediately said “Congratulations” to them, since I figured it was in order. Well, the girl handled it very poory by giving me and the boyfriend a nasty look and said “I don’t know what you’re talking about, we’re not engaged!” and storming off. He had this pissed off look on his face and I apologized profusely and explained myself, but the damage had been done.

Now, I NEVER say ANYTHING about getting engaged to a dating couple unless they bring it up. Even if I see a diamond ring on the left ring finger, I act like I didn’t see anything until the announcement is made!

@moderndaisy: So weird that Mother-In-Law told you about an engagement story and everything! Did she dream it?

Good idea though on not saying anything until it’s certain next time. Just like pregnancy! A girl I work with got asked TWICE in one day by different people when she was due, and she’s not pregnant. I would NEVER ask that, I don’t understand some people haha.

@moderndaisy:

Same here  – I saw the ring on a friend’s fringer a few years back, and she noticed my look, but I was afraid to ask since it was not only an akward time for me and my BF, but also I didn’t want to put them on the spot if A) it’s not an engagement and B) if they haven’t said it, it hasn’t happened.  So I tried to act like I DIDN’T notice, we all went out to dinner, and finally she blurts out, “Didn’t you see the ring?! We’re engaged!”  It made it fun and light hearted, and they got to tell their news wihtout it being ruined by someone asking.  Also, even though I was present when another set of friends went public, they had yet to do so online, so I waited until they “updated” to talk about it with anyone – until they annouce, it’s gossip – when they annouce, it’s news 🙂

I hate the questions, jokes and assumptions, too.  We have one mutual guy-friend, who means well enough who likes to try to comfort me by saying that my BF and I have been together so long, it’s not like it matters at this point… Argh.  It matters.  I’d like to see what he says now that HE’S engaged.  bleh.  BF’s little brother is asking his Girlfriend tonight.   I really, really want to be happy for them wihtout being jealous myself – giving myself panic attacks over all of this – it’s so aggravating.

That is really insensitive! I think that it’s one of those questions that are intended to be a joke, but really a rude inquiry to your future status. And not nice!
