This is long, but I promise it is worth the read! Grab some tissues…
I have to share this story because it had me in tears today. A co-worker e-mailed me this afternoon, and told me the story of her best friend who had just gotten married. Instead of trying to explain it, I will just copy and paste the e-mail…Enjoy.
“Remember how I told you I was going to be in my best friend Jessica’s wedding this month, and the whole drama with the seamstress about my dress? Well her wedding was this past weekend, and it was so amazing! Remember how I told you her father has been in Iraq for a year and 1/2? Well I guess they cancelled most of the wedding plans, and decided just to have a simple beach ceremony since she was really upset about her father not being able to come home to walk her down the aisle. I think she felt like it wouldn’t be worth having a big traditional wedding without him.
So her wedding was at St. Augustine beach, and it was so pretty! But Robert had the most amazing wedding gift for her! Jess and I were getting ready at the hotel when the concierge knocked on the door, and handed her an envelope. In the envelope was a card that read, “Jessica, today is the day you become my wife, a day I have looked forward to for so long. I know your heart will be heavy today without your dad here, but I am hoping my wedding gift to you will make it a little better. See you at the end of the aisle babydoll.” I thought the card alone was super sweet but it gets better. The back of the card informs her that once she is done getting ready a limo will be awaiting her to bring her to the ceremony site. (Jess was trying to cut costs everywhere she could, so we were just riding the couple blocks to the beach in my car.) She thought the limo was the surprise, and was really excited.
So after we finished getting ready we go downstairs, and sure enough the limo is waiting. The limo drive opens the door for us, we got in, and we make our way to the beach. When we arrived the limo driver opened the door, asked me to step out, then asked Jess to remain in the limo while the ‘second limo driver’ returned to open her door. We both kind of looked at each other wondering why there were two limo drivers. She kind of sat back down, and he shut her door. As I was waiting outside for her I saw the second limo driver get out of the passenger seat. He turned towards me and winked and I realized, IT WAS HER DAD!!!! He walked to the back of the limo, and opened the door to let Jessica out. Man, I wish you could have seen her face. She went from shock to tears in a matter of seconds! She just stood there and hugged him for what seemed like the longest time. I wish I had my camera on me, but I think the photographer got some shots. She just kept asking him “Aren’t you supposed to be in Iraq??” lol
No one except her husband knew her father was able to come home for her wedding! So it was a complete surprise when he walked her down the aisle. Everyone was in tears. I swear we cried through the whole ceremony. It was pretty amazing, and I know it made Jess’s wedding everything she wanted it to be. I am amazed Robert pulled it off, because he can’t keep a secret to save his life!”
The rest of the e-mail is just work stuff, but I had to share it with all of you. I was in tears reading the whole thing. I have never met Jessica, but I am so happy for her that she finally got to walk down the aisle with her dad. It makes me so thankful I have my dad here with me all the time, and I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like with him so far away.
