My thoughts on replicas (although I know it varies from person to person): if you go to a local dressmaker/seamstress, you’re going to get something much better than what you’d get online. I think the problem with ordering the “custom” dresses online is that if it turns out awful, most of your dress budget is gone. So I would personally much prefer to either a) go to a dressmaker locally or b) shop for a different dress used, maybe in a similar style.

Good luck!

Oh i’d be nervous. I found my Maggie for $400 though, so it’s possible to find one on a budget =]

If your dress has any lace or fancy stuff on it, i’d pass. If it’s just a simple cut, that’d be different. but even then, it’d probably need a real seamstress, in which the cost would be higher than original

Have you checked etsy? You can post that you want a custom dress made, and list your budget, and sellers bid on making it. Then you can see all the different sellers prices, feedback, work…it’s pretty neat. Just an idea!

I was in almost exactly the same situation as you! I fell in love with an $800 dress but my budget was around $400 also (including crinoline, etc.). I put in an alchemy request on etsy, because I’m leery of overseas reproductions, and have already had offers within my price range. ๐Ÿ™‚

That said, those offers are still 2x more than I’d expect to pay if I went through an overseas company; I did a lot of research and IMO Jeff Liu (April Bridal on eBay) looks to be one of the most qualified and least shady reproduction designers. Every review I’ve seen of him has been glowing, both here on WB and elsewhere. He seems to be the real deal, and the dresses in his eBay shop range below $200 for the most part.

If you’d like to see some reviews of brides who have done the custom dress overseas, I’ve found that these reviews have been helpful.

This one is a money savings forum that talks about Landy/Milly Bridal

This one is a destination wedding forum that talks about several different ones.

This one is reviews on project wedding about Milly Bridal

Hope this helps!!!

I wore a Maggie Sabelle REPLICA!  I found it by accident, at a local seamstress/bridal store.  I LOVED it and the owner ordered it for me to fit my measurements, and she told me she gets all her dresses from China. She told me a lot of designers get them produced in China.  I didn’t even know it was a Maggie…or a knockoff, I just had to have it.   I saw in a magazine a picture of the Sabelle and said OMG that’s my dress.  It was my 2nd dress, I had been laid off and if I hadn’t found it there was no way I would be in the market for a Maggie or the Sabelle at a price tag of $1,800!  I look at my dress now and cannot believe what I paid for it.  I am not sure the quality of the dresses online, becuase of course, you never know what you are going to get.  But the owner of the store who ordered my dress, can pretty much order anything if you are interested in having me contact her.  She can get you any gown for $500.  Here are pics of mine and no one believed me when I told them it was a replica! I had nothing but compliments on it! I am so happy I walked into that store looking to get my first dress altered.

I am in CA, it took about 6 weeks for my dress to come in.
