Hi Bees! SO and I are in the process of designing my ring. We have the stone (radiant cut, just over 2ct) and are now designing the setting. I’m in love with the stone so want a fairly plain and minimalist setting so it can be the focus. We have the CAD drawings with a mini cathedral but now I’m looking at them I’m torn between that vs just a plain prong setting.
E.g. mini cathedral:
E.g. plain prong:
What do you think would look better? What do you have? Any pros or cons to share about either setting?

It looks like the mini cathedral’s shoulders don’t actually attach to the setting. If that’s the case, it’s gonna snag and pull on everything and probably break.

PrincessPeach13 : Not the actual settings, just example pics. The mini cathedral is attached to a small ring around the diamond 🙂 thanks for your comment!

apresallday : in that case, I’d go with the cathedral for sure!

I like the cathedral setting.

apresallday : I have a 1.5C radiant and went through the same thing. Couldn’t decide between the Tiffany style plain or the cathedral. Went with the plain prong and am glad I did. I wanted something SUPER minimal to show off the diamond, so I went with a very thin band and setting, and I love the way it turned out

I vote cathedral – it will add a little more protection to the diamond and from the top down will look nearly the same as the other setting.

Cathedral actually connected to the basket has my vote. Personally I’m not a fan of the floating shoulders pictured, or plain prongs in general, unless they are the Tiffany style Tulip prongs that comform to the stone and wrap it so beautifully like they do.

I prefer the plain prongs but it looks like I’m in the minority 🤷🏼♀️

I love the way the mini cathedral setting showcases the diamond! However, the more visible security of the plain prong setting is a bonus on that end!

I prefer the cathedral, although I am a little bias 😉

mrsgreeneyes : FWIW I had a cathedral setting before, the shoulders were not atttached and it never once got caught on any thing.
On the other hand, my current e-ring is a 1.4 elongated GIA radiant, and I LOVEEEEE the open prong setting that I chose. When you have a high quality sparkling diamond, you should show that baby off! I dont like any baskets (regardless of shape or size) where the stone is hiddden or covered. Whats the point if all you see is surface?? And lets face it, theres so much more to look at then just the top.
Heres my ring in all her pronged, and highly visible, glory::

I love the cathedral! The stone is absolutely stunning, I’m sure either setting will highlight it beautifully

I vote plain. It’s classic 💍

Classic plain solitaire, but I’m biased. That looks exactly like my setting. It’s classic and will go with anything.
