@AlmostHisWife:  I haven’t taken it, but you need to follow up with the doctors office for dosage.

For most acne medications, stay away from the sun and do not go to a tanning bed… this can cause a pretty severe burn. Keep hydrated, since many of them dry out your skin cells and also be patient with it. It does not clear up overnight!

I took Solodyn 80 mg tablets about 5 months (last August through January).  I took them every day for a couple months, then every other day, and finally every 3rd day toward the end.  I was also given Ziana topical cream to use at night and AcZone cream for the morning.  Seriously, within a month of using all of these my skin had completely cleared, and within 4 ish months all of my old acne scars were gone.

My derm told me that you’re never supposed to take them for more than 6 months, but anything less than that is safe.  I noticed that I got lower abdominal cramps during the time I was using them, and would have watery stools (sorry TMI), both of which were caused by the long term usage.  Another thing I noticed was that my skin got shinier than it usually does, and I had to use a lot more powder makeup to cover it up.

I’ve been off it now for several months and skin is still (almost) perfect as I’m still using the creams every day.  For me at least, the tummy pains were well worth the results, because I had horrible cystic bumps that honestly hurt worse.

Hope this helps!

I’ve taken it twice, once about a year ago to see how it would work before the wedding and once again this year.  I took the 80mg once a day for 2 months the first time and 1 month the second time, both worked like a charm!!

Good luck!

@AlmostHisWife:  I took it around dinnertime every day, but I didn’t notice any tiredness.  The cramps were almost like clockwork, I noticed they would happen the day after I took the pill, and only right before/during number two (tmi again!)  For me, they happened once a day and lasted for 15 ish minutes, then went away right after I went number two.  When I took the pills every other day, it happened around 24 hours after taking the pill, and again, I felt crampy only for the 10-15 minutes leading up to going to the bathroom, and I was normal before and after that.

The cramps were about on par with bad period cramps, but the most annoying part was really the diarrhea (ew).  There were a few times when I was taking it every day that I had to rush to the bathroom, and I noticed that foods that normally don’t bother me (Chinese, milk, deli turkey) hurt my stomach.

Also, FYI, when he cut my dose down to every 3rd day, I barely had these issues at all.  Does your doc plan to step down your dosage once your acne clears up?
