Debit transactions usually show up right away.  I don’t know how money could be taken out without the information showing up.  Did you check the history of your bank account to see what happened?

that is scary!

i’ve experience fradulent charges on my credit card before, which they cleared me of, and issued me a new card- but never lost money out of my back account.

I hope the bank helps you!! and take the money from your family, like you said, that’s what family is for- to help in times of need.

If you just transferred some money to your bank account, I would take it out ASAP so you have the cash on hand.  It’s possible someone skimmed your debit card.  It will get sorted out, but why allow them to have more of your cash than neccessary?

I am surprised you can’t cancel the card immediately, every bank I know here has a 24 hour line for that.

@AB Bride:  Agreed.

There’s a description available almost immediately for every debit purchase unless it’s something like pay at the pump gas. Those swipes will normally place a hold of $1 or so and clear a few days later. If money was taken from your account, there should be a paper trail. Are you sure you didn’t have anything pending that cleared?

Many banks do have an after-hours number you can call to report fraud; if your bank offers that, definitely call is ASAP so you can report this as soon as possible! It will help in the recouping the funds.

Sorry this has happened! 🙁

Go first thing in the morning – and I’m not sure you want to put any more money in the account, if someone out there has gotten ahold of your number. They’ve drained it now, they can’t make any more transactions, but if you put more money into it, you will be basically handing it to them … you will want to have your bank freeze the account first thing tomorrow morning.

My bosses wife had this happen.  She went through a drive through and paid with her card.  The  person at the register took a picture of the card while she was swiping it with her cell phone and handed it back.  She texted the pic to someone and they bought several $100 of stuff with it.  She was able to dispute it with the bank, file a police report and have the money returned to the account but it took a week or two.  I’m way more cautious now about letting anyone have my card out of my sight.  I hope everything works out for you.

Happened to me too. The bank will re-emburse you if it is a fraud. Although I would not transfer any more money to this account as it is being hacked.

Deep breath, you’ll be fine! It sucks, but there’s a system in place for this. Don’t worry too much.

@nikkialys:  Even with watching your card, things can happen.  I just read an article this morning about how the portible debit machines at restaurants are being swapped while the waiter/waitress is busy and the swapped one then sends information about the pin and magnetic strip of every card that is used.
