San Francisco City Hall is a very traditional (and gorgeous!) place to elope. Plus, lots of local SF photogs run great deals for people who elope at city hall during the week! Keep in mind that SF is not southern California: the summers are usually chilly and foggy. Spring and Fall are both great times to visit.

What kind of scenery are you looking for? If you like the Ocean Laguna Beach or Dana point has some beautiful parks on cliffs that would be great for an elopment. Catalina is a neat little place to do a mini honeymoon afterword also. Big sur is beautiful too. If you like the mountains/lakes Mammoth is beautiful or yosimite.

It sounds like we do need a little more info, ie. city, quaint, country, mountains, snow, beach?

We like green nature (think gardens, forests, mountain sides, etc.), but we haven’t ruled out beaches.

Especially if you pick a weekday, some of the typical wedding venues may allow you to do a little ceremony if you ask. Many places will allow for a quick ceremony and some photos. Some photographers and other vendors have special elopement packages too. Look into the following:
Compass Rose Gardens in Bodega Bay
UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley
Harvest Inn, Napa
Elk Cove Inn
Lake Tahoe—lots of locations
Palace of Fine Arts (Rotunda) in SF
Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, Golden Gate Park
Rose Garden, Golden Gate Park
You could also rent a beautiful vacation home and have a minister come marry you on the balcony overlooking the water or forest. Then you also have a place to stay for a night or two.

I love to browse the vacation rentals on Boutique-Homes.com
Here are several in CA for rent. You could find one near a town so you can go out to dinner and have an officiant/photographer come to your rental home, maybe even a private chef!
Or did you want to go somewhere where they take care of all that for you (cake, champagne, officiant)?

@theseautumneyes: what is beautiful to you and FI? Are you beach people? Mountain people? desert people? wine people? …… there are tons of great costal locations or wineries in CA…. those come to mind as ideal places. But there are also majestic ‘nature’ places too – if beach/wine isn’t your thing.
