I saw someone mention “Build me up buttercup” for a romantic song at a wedding. That’s about a girl who leads a guy on! Like…what?

@chillinchillin:  Yes, Marry You! I want to laugh whenever I hear this used as a wedding song…I’m incredulous that so many brides don’t seem to read or understand the lyrics.

Also, I’m hearing a lot of Hallelujah (whichever version) used as a wedding song too…I absolutely love this song (particularly the Jeff Buckley version) but it’s the most gut-wrenching, haunting piece of music. Maybe it’s because they used it at the end of Shrek (which I also found odd).

I haven’t heard it at a wedding, but one of my bridesmaids and I went to a wedding expo, and there was a dance school there doing dance demonstrations for people that wanted lessons or choreography for their wedding/first dance. Anyway, when they started their ballroom dance demonstration, the song that came on was Roxanne by the Police. My Bridesmaid or Best Man and I just looked at each other like “What the…!?” o_O

I think it’s kind of hard to find songs that aren’t a bit awkward, as one PP said; in fairness, writing music about love that lasts forever isn’t that much fun! Most great songs, I think, are about heartbreak in a way. Or a bit creepy. Our first dance (eek, five weeks out!!) is to Pure Imagination from the first Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory film, which is really not a love song, but which my Fiance and I really love. I don’t think it has to be a love song to be lovely.

I have been to too many weddings where they’ve played Green Day Time of your Life at the end of the night.  Now, I’m a HUGE Green Day fan but doesn’t the full title give it away Time of your Life (Good Riddance) tell you something…..or the lyrics.  To be fair, it maybe is good riddance to the guests for some brides Wink

@Ruby-Redshoes:  Haha, I saw the title and charged in here to say “Every Breath You Take”!

Also “You’re Beautiful” is supposed to be about a Stalker, and I think I saw someone on here say once that someone did their first dance to “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton, and I actually recoiled just reading that.

@EffieTrinket:  I went to a Christening where a girl sang “Hallelujah” in the Church. Everyone was just sat there looking stunned afterwards.
