As my midwife described it they aren’t harmful for home use, but they do potentially add anxiety if you can’t find the heartbeat right away, and they often tend to pick up other noises too.

@PoliceWifeToBe:  It can definitely take awhile to get it 🙂 I was already 13 weeks when I first tried (with that same brand of doppler) and it definitely took me awhile. It was a lot easier when I had a full bladder and when I’d just eaten something. Good luck!

Yes, the link that Audreysdance gave was Sooooooo helpful!  But I just wanted to say that I got mine at like 8 and a half weeks I think, and I always found the hb eventually but sometimes it took a really long time, even after watching the video.  The baby is soooo tiny and it moves a lot, so even when I caught it, sometimes it was super hard to hear and I’d lose it fast.  I gave it a rest during week 10 because my mom was in town and we were busy and it had frustrated me, but now that I’m in week 11, I nail it every time.  I think the baby is finally big enough for it to be easier to find.  I was jealous of Elley finding hers every time -lol, but I think the baby was just too tiny to find the hb consistently and without a ton of effort:)

@PoliceWifeToBe:  it took almost 2 hours for me the first time (and actually dh found it that time.) I was 8 weeks at the time. im pretty good at finding it now (Im also 12 weeks now), but there were a couple times I couldn’t (although usually my stomach felt “off”. I promise myself if I can’t find it once, I can’t freak out, but twice I could start to worry. I’ve never not been able to find out once in 2 tries. Just keep at it. And look realllly low.

I would wait another week and try again.  I went in at 11.5 weeks and they couldn’t find it.  It is hard to detect this soon.  Also, the nurse told me that since they moved into their new building the dopplers haven’t been working all that great.  They think there is some interference in their new building.  She also asked me if I had lotion on my belly.  So that might make a difference.  We found mine on ultrasound after that failed attempt with doppler and it was about an inch below my belly button.  So yes look really low like above post says.

that link above helped me so much. i am glad it helped you guys. as i side note i also love the girl who posted it. i followed a bunch of her vlogs and she has had such a hard road to her take home baby (12 mos ttc, ectopic, misscarriage, scary NT scan) but she has him now and he is the sweetest perfectly healthy little miracle!

i was well past 10 weeks when i got my doppler and i had a hard time for the first week or so too. just remember your baby is super tiny right now and can swin around so many places. i would find him so low, practically in my vagina, for several weeks into the second tri.  i hope the video helps you. at first i cursed my doppler thinking it was gonna make me even more paranoid but once you get the hang of it it really is a godsend. Don;t worry it doesnt hurt the baby one lick. Do not give up doll! xo
