@raindropsoup:  It does sound so tempting to get married earlier. A great wedding can be planned quickly, though I think you’re right, people might not be able to come on such short notice and might not want to come if you were already married. In some states you can get marriage benefits before your married, I wonder if that’s a possibility in Oregon. Good luck!

I guess you could ask the VIP if they would be able to make it.  You’ll have to figure out what you want more.  But would the later party be at least $3,000?

You should look at domestic partnerships on your health insurance–many plans cover opposite-sex domestic partners, conditional upon you having lived together for at least a year and/or officially registered (my FI’s says you don’t have to be registered if your state doesn’t do opposite-sex).  Basically, as soon as I can prove that we’ve lived together for a year, I can jump onto his insurance.

FYI our car insurance went down almost $300 a year after we got married! I had no idea that you got a car insurance discount for that.

I think it’s just a dual car coverage account that makes the difference.  Ours went from $456 and $326 separately to $358 jointly every 6 months.  I don’t think being married is the discount, it’s two cars on one plan (age, driving history as well).
