I didn’t know what a moissanite was until wedding bee (except for the mention of it in the movie Snatch) and I had thought an Asha was a type/brand of moissanite. Is that correct? What is the difference between a reg moissy and an asha? Thanks.

Asha is a cubic zirconia with a diamond coating. Moissanite is it’s own thing. It’s a clear gemstone originally found in a meteorite, now grown in labs. They tend to run a bit on the warm side of the diamond color scale. Amora moissanite is a moissanite enhanced (through heat and pressure, I think) to be whiter. And to make it even more confusing, there’s the Amora Gem, which is a new form of moissanite that can’t be sold in most countries until 2015 because the company that currently makes moissanite has a patent on the growth of all types of moissanite.

Jabberwocky gave a pretty good description of it. I’ll just add a bit of moissy info. Moissanite and the Amora Gem are all Silicon Carbide. It’s a bit harder than sapphire, which makes it a great stone for everyday wear. It also can have faint yellowish and/or greenish tones; the Amora Gem will be an F, so it’ll be colorless.

Asha is a diamond coated CZ made by Better than Diamond, Amora moissanite is a brand of moissanite to so speak that is also made by Better than Diamond. Moissanite as it is currently sold un-treated is grown by CREE Int’l, then cut up or faceted by Charles and Colvard into useable gemstones for jewelry. BTD takes and screens un-treated moissy to put through its Amora “program” so to speak, changing the stones on an atomic level to improve colorlessness.
The Amora Gem (also a product by BTD), is a new form of silicon carbide (just like carbon has different crystaline structures, so does SiC) gemstone that is truly colorless, and will also come in cuts not offered in moissanite, such as Hearts and Arrows Rounds, Cushions, true Princess, Asscher, Krupps/Emerald. It will also have an OEC, which is also offered in moissanite from C&C.

@breadandbutterflies: You must really be in love with snatch! I love that movie and I haven’t seen it in years but I don’t even remember them talking about moissanites!

@MissS2MrsD: No I just have a memory for useless knowledge. There is a scene where a character find out one of the diamonds they stole or a number of the diamonds stolen were moissanites, I believe he is trying to sell the stones when he finds out. I have not seen the film is a number of years I just remembered that scene.
Thanks to everyone who answered so far. You have been very helpful!
