Newly engaged and relatively young and inexperienced in wedding I dont really know how the gift portion of the wedding goes. I’ve heard of bridal showers, but do you have a bridal shower and get gifts there and then people bring gifts to the wedding as well or is it one or the other? As far as registering, how many places should you register for?

You get gifts at the bridal shower and the wedding. And technically you can register at as many places as you want. I think the average is about 2-3. I’ve also read and heard that it’s good to register for more gifts than people attending the wedding. This is because people will buy you gifts for both the shower and the wedding. Some might buy you gifts if you have an engagement party.
I think everyone who just gets engaged is pretty new at all this wedding terminology. I sure was! I’ve been to many weddings but I never paid attention to all the detail that really goes into it. Google.com and Weddingbee.com are my two best friends now when it comes to wedding questions!
Good luck and happy planning. 🙂

Normally, people will give you a large gift off the registry at your shower, and another smaller gift or just cash at the wedding. If they’re not attending the shower, they might bring a large gift to the wedding or give you a greater amount of cash.
I agree with the other poster that 2-3 registries is a good amount. Make sure you register at stores that are near where most of your guests live, especially if you have several coming from out of town. (If half of your guests live in a town that doesn’t have a Macy’s, for example, then a Macy’s registry isn’t going to do those guests a whole lot of good.) Bed Bath and Beyond is a pretty good place to register, as are many department stores that carry home goods and kitchen appliances.
You should probably start your registry about 6 months before the wedding, and check back every couple months to replace any items that have been discontinued. Most people won’t buy anything off of it until a few days before your bridal shower anyway.

Showers are usually a few months before the wedding I think. I would look online to see what types of things there are to register for and plan to spend a few hours in the store deciding which items to register for.
We didn’t register for a lot since we already had a home set up before we got married.

My shower will be about 8 weeks before the wedding. I think 1 – 3 months is pretty typical, but I could be wrong.
