My fiance and I are considering South Africa for our honeymoon. We’re interested in going on a safari in a nearby country for a few days too. We are total foodies, love the beach, wineries, etc. Any recommended “must dos”? Any experience with different tour operators? Thanks in advance! My fiance is planning the honeymoon, but I’d love recommendations from any South African bees or any bees that went to South Africa for their honeymoon!

I’ve never been, but have heard it’s a beautiful country with truly amazing people!

Depends where you go…remember the Soccer World Cup is going on this summer so Africa itself will be one gigantic party, tons of tourists and I mean millions…and if your soon to be husband is a sports fan then he will be glued..

I just left South Africa and it is absolutely beautiful. However the World Cup will be June 2010 so the country will be entirely busy and overcrowded. Must do’s are Cape Town and while in Cape Town you must go to: Robbin Island, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Camps Bay, VA Waterfront. Also, the wineries and restaurants outside of Cape Town are fantastic such as Franschoek, etc. It’s best to stay at a guesthouse/b&b and there are many in Camps Bay, Greenpoint, and the VA Waterfront. I can personally recommend Cheviot Place Guesthouse.
For safari’s, it would be best to spend some time at Kruger Park, 2nd largest game park in the world. However, we went to Victoria Falls, Livingston, Zambia and it was fabulous. Also, if you decide to go to Vic. Falls, you can take a day trip or spend multiple days in Chobe National Park in Botswana for a safari.
You will absolutely love Southern Africa, it is stunning.

SA is amazing! Best scenary and natural landscapes. I think seeing all the exotic animals in their natural environment helps. There are actually safaris you can do right in SA – I think the best chance of seeing the “big 5” is in Kroger National Park – just north of Johannesburg! We saw lions hunting & just hanging out, giraffes eating off trees, gorgeous colorful birds, rhinos, hippos, warthogs (like pumba from lion king – lol), and more and more…
We went in Jun/July, so it was definitely their winter, and lots of animals gather by the watering holes so they’re easier to spot.
Here’s the tour that we went on, it was so funny, my best friend and i booked this on line, and then it turns out we were the only two people on the entire trip! What luck!!
I really liked durban for its beaches & coast as well, beautiful crashing waves – get a beachfront hotel – we watched dolphins play in the surf for hours. a bit cold to swim during winter, but you could go surfing with a wetsuit!
For something different, the karoo desert might be interesting – arid environments, but there were ostriches running around the site, and from the remotely located cabins, you could see nebula at night and 10,000 stars all at once!
Knysna is good for whale-watching, it is a town with a cool nautical vibe.
Have a great trip! SA is unforgettable!
