The travel agent will be charging a service charge, so there’s that. I would imagine it’s about 10%. Also, you’ll need transport from one place to another. It’s very cheap to get taxis in Bali and Thailand though.

I never go through a travel agent now that you can book everything online for much better deals! There are all inclusive resort packages online too if that’s what you’re looking for. Websites like tripadvisor, wikitravel, expedia, priceline, travelocity, vayama, cheapoair, agoda, asiarooms, hotels.com, airbnb, kayak, etc. are my go-tos.

You could take the money you saved by booking everything yourself and spend it elsewhere during your trip! Have a great time!

Are you guys both American? You’ll be able to get a visa upon arrival in Bali. In Thailand you’ll be granted a tourist visa.

I was talking about transport from one hotel to another.

I’ve always found better deals doing things myself rather than through an agent.

If you can swing it and you’re bold enough, the real trick is to get into Bangkok and buy everything (flights, hotels, etc.) there.  There’s a little street with a ton of travel agencies there, if I remember correctly.  A few years back there was even an article in the Asia Wall Street Journal recommending this strategy.

Barring that (it would be pretty adventurous but probably save you tons if you pull it off), I would just do it myself online.

I had this happen when I went to the Greek Islands – I asked for a quote and itinerary from an agent, and just used the same skeleton (how many days in each place) but booked my own hotels (not the ones listed) and ferries – I saved money AND got better hotels.  Still feel a little guilty, but not really.

@Lulume:  Do you speak the local language?  If not, I would use a travel agent that specializes in the region.  Yes, you could do it all on your own and probably find better deals but if you have any problems you are going to be restricted in how you can deal with them.

Try a different travel agency if you think you are being over quoted.  You could also show the travel agent the prices you found and see how they respond.  One tip I remember reading about was using a travel agency that speicifcally specializes in travel to the country in Asia you plan to go to.
