i love the Keys. My brother lives there and I’ve stayed with him a few times. I suggest renting a car and driving from Miami or Ft Laderdale (way cheaper flying in there than to KW directly). The drive is beautiful.  Stop at Alabama Jack’s for a beer and fried goodies – its a redneck looking bar that juts out in to the mangroves – its awesome.

Take your time key hopping – I wouldn’t bother with a travel agent – you can go on a website like Trip Advisor for some good hotel suggestions.  Key West itself doesn’t have much in the way of beaches –  so you’d want to stay at one of the more northern keys if you want to lay in the sand.

In Key West, go to the Conch Republic for dinner – they have a lot of good live music. And the sunset cruises leave from that area each evening – worth doing once.  Its also pretty easy to rent canoes/kayaks to wander around in the mangroves.

I definitely second the driving suggestion. It really is a wonderful drive with lots of sights. THe main keys that are more populated are Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West but in between are wonderful hideaways. Bahia Honda is a wonderful park with a beach in the “lower keys.” There are also wonderful camp grounds on many keys if you like to do that. Kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and drinking are the main activities in the keys.

I absolutely agree with doing it on your own.  I always use Trip Advisor for reviews, then plan accordingly.  If you fly into Miami, keep in mind they also have gorgeous beaches to the north.  My favorites are Delray Beach and Gulfstream Beach (the furthest north).

The drive to the Keys is amazing… make sure to make a good playlist and rent a convertible if you can.  The key lime pie at the Blonde Giraffe is to die for…

I LOVE THE KEYS!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been there a few times, my cousin lived there for a few years. Definitely drive, have you thought about renting a houseboat?I’m trying to talk Fiance into renting a houseboat in the keys for our honeymoon… 😉

There’s a great bar in Key Colony beach (Marathon) called Cabana Breezes, on the water with a long pier… my fave. If you like nightlife and don’t want to drive an hour after you’ve been drinking, I suggest staying in key west.

you must have a chocolate covered frozen key lime pie on a stick. it’s heaven in dessert form. that is all.

the keys are GREAT. you’ll have a blast and yes take a convertible if possible, the drive is gorgeous. i would fly into miami and start there! isla morada is really beautiful and key largo is known for diving and water sports. in key west i LOVE the douglas house it’s so quaint and charming–it’s right on duval street and everywhere is walk or bikeable. (is bikeable a work??)

I think that is a great idea… I live in Miami Beach so am partial…but I would suggest flying in…spending a day or two doing the Miami Beach scene then start heading down the Keys. I don’t think you need a travel agent. There are plenty of restaurants and great resorts that have access to kayaking, snorkeling, and a ton of excursion places along US1 that will take you on the things you want to do.

Good luck planning!!
