I’m trying to get ideas for a southern wedding theme, like what kinds of flowers, decor, etc, and was looking for your help. You all are very creative and I’d love to hear some things that pop into your head when you think of Savannah, Georgia or a wedding in the south.
A little background: My wedding is going to be in one of Savannah’s squares for the ceremony and then at the oldest hotel in Savannah for the reception. I really want to tie in this southern feel with the whole wedding! Also, girls are wearing seersucker green dresses for a little southern charm!
Thanks in advance!

We’re having our wedding in Charleston. I’m having a brooch bouquet with pale pink silk peonies as the base of the bouquet. Also, I’m incorporating pearls into my jewelry and also the pearl dragees on my cake. I’ll be buying a clay magnolia for my cake too since that screams Southern to me. Also, our food is a big representation of the south – our entree choices are fried chicken, filets of beef, and shellfish over grits. For our guest book too we’re having everyone sign a vintage handkerchief and making it into a quilt. I know not all of this probably screams Southern to everyone but I hope something helps.

Lace, simplicity, and venue/background. 🙂 Being that we originally wanted to get married in Savannah. lol

@AmeliaBedelia: I agree with lace too, I”ll be having lace on my veil. Also simplicity is big. We’re having our ceremony in an old Southern style gazebo and keeping all the decorations simple.

I think one of the best ways to fit that theme is with the food! @mandb122 had great suggestions. You could have glass dispensers with sweet tea and a lemonade.
Im from the midwest but when i think of a southern wedding i think of outdoors, great lighting in the trees or hanging from above, live band, light colors (pale pinks, whites, pale yellow, cremes etc), and a sophisticated casual feel.

Being from Georgia I think of Savannah with Jasmine, gardenias, ivy and roses. Silk and/or lace
Urns full of flowers in iron or plaster
I miss home wahhhhhhhhhhhhh

When I think GA south, its parasols, very girly (like others mentioned lace, pearl accents.)
Also rocking cowboy boots! And outdoor games. Here are a few pics from my wedding that had a southern Texas country feel.

I agree with much of the above – gardenias, magnolias, twinkly lights through Spanish moss. I think of alfresco dinner and simply elegant table settings.
Mrs. Lab’s wedding should give you some inspiration. Grace Bonney’s (from Design*Sponge) was beautiful too. http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/photogallery/grace-and-aaron

Browse http://swsmag.net for ideas (Southern Weddings Magazine blog).
Serve comfort foods along with sweet tea, lemonade, etc. Although traditionally, receptions are simply cake and punch with mingling the entire time.

Great ideas here. I think lemonade, sweet tea and mint juleps are essential. Magnolias are the perfect southern flower.
I love seersucker! What an awesome idea!

These are so wonderful! Thank you ladies for all the inspiration. I really want to incorporate magnolias (on my hair/dress, bridesmaids) and gardenias (my favorite flower). Sweet tea will unquestionably be there as it’s my fave non-alcoholic beverage. Comfort foods are on the menu, definitely included is shrimp & grits.
Now, I just need to compile all the wonderful ideas and try to incorporate them. I really like using Spanish moss in some way and the urns too…ahh! so many ideas!

One of my friends had beautiful centerpieces at her wedding- they were peaches stacked on a white cake stand, with white and other pastel colored flowers stuck in between. I think peaches would be a great decor element for a Georgia wedding!
