I love spanx, I’d say don’t get the skirt kind- they’ll ride up. Get the longer shorts kind, and make sure the legs won’t roll up (it helps if they’re a sewn hem instead of just raw cut edge.) The ones i like best aren’t spanx brand, I got them at target, they’re from one of the popular underwear brands, jockey or something but I don’t remember which, they have a high waist and sewn hem on the legs. But spanx brand is good too.

My SIL insisted on wearing Spanx with her dress at our wedding.  It was 90+ degrees outside.  She looked good in the dress without it, but she swears by it.  Of course not long into the reception she was back in my dressing room having her husband get them off of her because it was so hot.  Classy.

I – had a well-made dress and didn’t need another constricting layer.

MabelleBliss +1. well said.

This article is neat: The Pros and Cons of Spanx

Most of the time I find them overly constricting and make me feel very uncomfortable…to the point where I don’t even want to wear the outfit. They also make me very hot and have little breathability. I would suggest finding a more comfortable brand.

Flexees at Macy’s is the way to go.  I feel like Spanx has too much give.  This is my go to piece for any dress that I need “help” wearing.  Straps come off too.

But like PP my dress was well constructed and I wore nothing under it. 😉

I am sooo pro spanx, however, since wedding dresses are soooo fitted, be very careful about the seam! Spanx tummy shorts have a seam right down the middle that will show on certain dresses… so try them on first!

<3 <3 <3 just tried on my (super fitted) mermaid gown with my Spanx Amazing!!!! i have the ones that go up to the underbust and the shorts go down to just above the knee! getting them on is a bitch but mine is super comfy! and if your borderline between 2 sizes definantly go a size up!

I have worn Spanx, the highwaisted kind with short (?) attached, I’ve had them for a couple of years so, they might be slightly different now. In my experience, they are good at making you seem firm. Also, the thigh control portion does a good job of making my legs seem smaller.

What I don’t like is that there is a seem that runs up the middle, so if it’s a thinner fabric you would see it and the leg portion is too long for short dresses. My main issue is that if you imagine an hourglass figure, the Spanx compress you and the extra “stuff” needs somewhere to go, so that the widest part, the hips, get smooshed and the availble space is at the waist, so it sort of makes me look more tube shaped.

So, it’s not a perfect solution.

Edit: Also, as already noted, they do not breathe. I actually found this to be a positive when I wore them to an outdoor wedding (that I didn’t know was outdoor) during the hotest part of the day, because otherwise my dress would have shown the sweat on my back.
