Back story- DH is 35 and I’m 24. I’ve been off birth control for 2 years and since then only used the pull out method. From June 2012- November 2012 was NTNP but since November we have tried keeping track of when I ovulate and BD every 2 days right before I ovulate. Tracking is extremely confusing!
Last week I had my annual pap and asked my Dr. to refer me to an OBGYN. She said she would but first she wanted to run some labs because she thinks I have PCOS. My results came in to day. They are negative but the DR. (a different one then I saw the other day) says that I can still have it but wants my husband to have his sperm tested before they do any further testing on me.
My question to you is where do we go to get the sperm analysis? Do I ask my current Dr. for a referral to the OBGYN and will they take care of it? I’m sorry bees, I’m just confused and I really want to get the show on the road 🙂 Oh and the current DR. said she didn’t know where to send us 🙁

Most likely you will need a referral or a “prescription” for the SA. We had to have ours done at a fertility clinic, but I’ve heard some labs or even hospitals can do them. But ask your doctor, he’ll know. Good luck!

I would suggest calling your OB and telling them that you want an SA done. Remember, you are paying them. They will do it if you ask them to.

@whiskeyandrhinestones: Hi there! Sorry you’re going through this! My DH just got an SA done and we were just as confused. I’d recommend that your DH call the closest urologist’s office and ask about how to get a SA. If they can’t do it there, they should be able to tell you who to talk to. Good luck!

My DH just got a “prescription” from his GP. He dropped his sample off at the lab in the hospital. GL

Thanks ladies. The first Dr. I talked to won’t be back to the office until tomorrow. She mentioned the sperm analysis first but said that she had no idea where to send us… I thought that was a little odd. She has been out of the office since Friday so a different dr had a nurse call me. I think ill just call the original Dr. tomorrow to get the referral to the OBGYN I want to go to and also call an urologist’s to see what the next step is for DH.

I would ask for a referral to an OB/GYN (or ask a friend for a recommendation). Generalist OBs still have a lot more training in fertility and stuff than general practitioners have, and they might be able to figure out a lot without more invasive testing. They can also order a semen analysis and analyze it. They would only need to send your DH to a urologist if things are abnormal. Good luck!

Just ask your Dr. Mine gave me a goodie bag with the sterile cup and all directions. All DH had to do was call them ahead of time so that someone was there to get the sample.

@whiskeyandrhinestones: when you figure out what lab you are going to make sure you know what kind of tests they run. We went to a fertility seminar at a RE’s office and he said some only run a sperm count but that’s useless, just make sure they test count, motility and morphology otherwise he will end up doing it again if you end up having to go to a fertility doctor. Good luck!
